We had the good fortune of connecting with Karlisha Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karlisha, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
At some point I had to decide to believe in myself and pursue my Lash business full-time. Which led to the decision for me to take a break from college. Once I put all of my energy into one path things started to line up for me. I decided to go to Esthetician school and work towards my goal of owning a Lash Shop. Building my business hasn’t been easy but it is so rewarding. Being able to do what I love everyday makes it all with it. Not only do I offer Eyelash Extension services but I recently launched my strip lash line. I am now in a position to help other women that are interested in the lash industry. Nothing brings me greater joy than empowering other women which has always been my goal.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At By Karli Beauty we provide natural Eyelash Extension services. It is our goal to enhance your natural beauty, not change it. I am excited to provide an luxury experience for my clients. I feel like the biggest challenge in this industry is staying consistent. I continue to overcome this challenge by always making it a goal to learn more. Not only do I continue to learn techniques but also business etiquette and how to be a great leader. I can not tell you how many webinars and mentorship phone calls I have taken this past year alone. Learning and staying up to date on trends keeps me excited about my job. On this journey I have learned to be adaptable sometimes you have to go with the flow or learn how to pivot when things are not going your way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Ponce City Market. I have been going there for years, there are so many things to do and a variety of restaurants to check out in that area. I love the fried chicken at Hop’s chicken. City winery is very nice too I can always appreciate good food along with live music. There is also the roof top Skyline Park that has a nice outdoor bar, games, a live DJ and lets not forget the view of the city. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first and foremost would like to give recognition to my mother Constance Dixon who made sure that I knew at a young age that I could create my future to be whatever I wanted it to be. I am also thankful that my mom taught me to be confident in who I am and to not view other women as my competition. She deserves her flowers for these lessons amongst many others that she instilled in me.
I would also would like to shoutout my husband Oshane who has encouraged me more than he will ever know. Starting with that first day he told me to choose a path and stick to it. His love and support throughout my journey has been exhilarating!
My sister Karmon Gibson my first client, my hype man, present to every group class, photoshoot, you name it she’s there! I appreciate all you do baby sis.
Thank you to my Boss sisters and my tribe! You all keep me going.
