We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Chaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, what inspires you?
The versatility of fashion serves as a profound inspiration for me. My aspiration is to make a lasting impact and leave a distinctive mark in the world of fashion. I am committed to offering my customers more sustainable materials, while simultaneously allowing them to embrace their individuality and dual nature through style.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional journey began in software engineering, where I dedicated 11 years of my career. However, in a male-dominated industry that lacked creativity and growth opportunities, I made the courageous decision to transition into the world of fashion. Leaving behind a six-figure career was a challenging choice, but I felt compelled to pursue my passion for fashion design on a full-time basis.
Initially, I tried to balance both fashion design and my career job simultaneously. However, as my career demanded more of my time, it became increasingly difficult to juggle both pursuits. Eventually, I had to make the difficult decision to leave my job and wholeheartedly pursue my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I realized that in order to achieve greatness, one must be willing to take risks and step out of their comfort zone. It was through embracing this mindset that I realized the true value of learning and growth.
In my fashion business, I have implemented a made-to-order model to reduce material waste and prioritize the use of sustainable materials. I aim to redefine the concept of “lavish” by inspiring individuality, promoting awareness, embracing boldness, and showcasing the essence of diverse lifestyles. For me, lavishness is defined by what resonates with each individual. Through the medium of fashion, I am empowered to advance this mission, infusing innovation with cultural influences.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently reside in Detroit, MI. As the city has been growing there are tons of places that I would love to hang out with a friend.
Restaurants: The Highlands 77th floor in the Renaissance overlooking the Detroit River and Canada, The Skip with an alley of bars and fun, Pizza Cat Max for great pizza downtown, The Evening bar inside the Shinola hotel downtown.
Museums: Detroit Institute of Art, Motown Museum, Detroit African American Museum and Henry Ford Greenfield Village. I find museums to be very inspiring for creatives as well as familiarizing yourself with local history. Detroit is the “Motor City” so there are tons!
Fun Sites: The Detroit River Walk with views of Canada, Belle Isle, an island between Detroit and Windsor, Canada, downtown Woodward Street with tons of stores to shop, Tiki Boat ride on the Detroit River
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my fiancé Saher, as she has been hard on me about not giving up on my dreams. even throughout my darkest time, she has always been there to show me the light. She’s definitely been the backbone of my support system.
