We had the good fortune of connecting with Jovanna Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jovanna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to own my own fashion company. After making a bag for a class project, I realized that my love for bags became something more when I enjoyed working with leather. I started making more bags and learning all I can about the craft and when I felt ready I started incorporating the business and putting my all into my newfound passion.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I design and create leather travel bags and accessories. The quality of the leather I use and the craftsmanship sets me apart and is the first thing people notice about all my bags and accessories. I am most proud of still being in business and being able to elevate and stay relevant. Also seeing my bags loved by customers. I love it when I people tell me they love my bags and still carry them after years of having them. I got here through lots of prayer, trial and error but most importantly believing in myself and knowing there is absolutely nothing else I would rather be doing. It definitely hasn’t been easy. But I persevere because I love what I do. I have learned to go after what I want. Stay true to my brand and the plan that I have put in place for it. I trust my fashion eye and creative skills. I have also learned to be consistent and keep pushing. When things are slow, when I don’t get the results I want, I keep pushing to stay relevant and consistently putting my brand out there.
I want the world to know that I am a black woman who loves to create leather travel bags and accessories. My bags last and are durable. They are one of a kind designs that you will not see everywhere. They are not only made well, but fashionable bags that will turn heads and catch peoples eyes. You can rock them to accentuate your outfit or make it the focal point of any look. You can carry a Tonē Bekka on any commute or travel and go in style!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a laid back person, however I would take them to some amazing restaurants. Columbus is a foodie town. Depending on the time of year like in the Summer if there is a festival we would go to one as well. We would enjoy some new attractions like Pins Mechanical, an adult bowling alley. Also do some fun activities like riding scooters down by the Scioto Mile. We would definitely do a little shopping at Easton and the Short North. Check out amazing boutiques and black owned businesses.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and family deserves all the credit and most importantly God. My husband has been by my side, encouraging me, helping me with building the business. He is a photographer so he hooks me up with great photos that help tell the story of my bags and brand. He’s been my by side at every market helping me set up and shut down. Always there to help me see the bigger picture and process my thoughts of what I want and where I am going. I call him my silent partner.

Without prayer and God showing his favor in my life I don’t know where I would be. He reminds me daily that I am right where I am supposed to be and doing what He wants me to do.
