We had the good fortune of connecting with Joma Barleah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joma, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
For now, the single most important decision I made that has contributed or will contribute to my success greatly is deciding to travel overseas to get a vast knowledge in my skills and business (Photography and Video production).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my photography journey in 2018 with my Samsung S7. Back then it was just taking pictures, never had the idea of sharing my work with the world via social media. Changes and growth came in when I started sharing my work. Jomaglobal is a brand that is dedicated to telling “African Stories” to African and showing the “The Real Africa” to the outside world and most especially to Africans in the diaspora.
What sets me apart from others is that I always make sure that every content I put out has a visual story to tell to my audience.
I am proud and excited that I’m making an impact in my country and Africa at large, I am excited that I’m changing the narrative of my country (Liberia).
Consistency and hardwork play a vital role in getting to where I am today. It wasn’t easy! Overcoming challenges and criticism especially from the internet is a gradual process that we have to deal with everyday but with set goals, having ambitions and consistency I’m able to overcome those challenges.
As a content creator or an entrepreneur, most often people will always give their opinion on your work especially from social media. I have learn to not be driven by comments made on my work or how many likes I received on social media, I have also learn that being consistent play a vital role in our lives especially when we want to achieve something great.
I want the world and especially Africans to know me as a visual artist who’s aim and goal is to show the real beauty of Africa through photography and videography and narrate the true story of Africa and Africans through my skills and platform.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Robertsport city which is located in western Liberia is one of my favorite places in the country. The city boasts of amazing beaches, lakes, mountains, hills and Isles that attract tourists so it would be an honor to take my friend on such an adventure. A few days will be spend in Robertsport and we can later go to the eastern part of the country where the great East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR) resides. ENNR boast of an amazing mountains view that stretches 40km into Guinea. (ENNR) has a beautiful weather, birds, butterflies and other animals.
Hiking up to the blue lake that sits up the mountain is an adventure that’s worth trying.
We will eat at local food places, mostly street food. some famous dishes in Liberia would be Fufu and Soup, GB, Cassava leaf, Palm Butter, roasted meat, pepper kala and fried plantain, etc.
We will hang out on the beach most times.
I love adventure so the most fun things will be traveling out of town and visiting tourists attraction sites outside the city.
Things to checkout would be the famous Kpatawee waterfall, the old Ducor Palace hotel, Libasa Ecoledge, Chimpanzee center in Marshall, The historical providence island, the Liberia national museum, etc.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It takes courage, hard-work, dedication and most importantly consistency to become a successful business person. With that being said, there are some people in our cycle that dedicate their time and effort to see us win. I would like to give a special thanks to Rami Balagi for being a mentor and a guardian during my content creating journey. I would also like to appreciate Libpositive for showcasing my work when no one else knew me. Lastly, I want to appreciate my friend Joseph N. Wamah Jr. for his endless support towards my creative journey.
