We had the good fortune of connecting with Joi Maddox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I had desire to stay home with my daughter. Which is why I named the business (Marina) after her! I was fortunate enough that my siblings and I were able to stay home with my mom growing up and I believe we were better off for it.
I also have always had the desire to work for myself and make my own schedule. Cooking and baking have always been things I was passionate about and been told I was great at.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business Treats by Marina is an in home baking business. We sell cake pops, shortbread and sugar cookies.
Something that I am most proud of in my business and something that sets me apart from others, is my ability to work with any budget.
If you give me a vision of what you want for your party or event, and the price that I quote is out of your budget I will gladly work with you to find something that you will still love at a price that we can work with. Seeing a customer’s face light up when they see the finished product always makes me so proud and excited!
I’m grateful that there haven’t been many challenges while starting my business. Family and friends have definitely helped spread the word about Treats by Marina which I’m so grateful for.
I want the world to know that when you order from Treats by Marina you’re ordering from a small company who cares and goes above and beyond to make your vision come true!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of favorite spots in the city are Grindhouse Killer Burger in Atlanta, it is always a great place to stop if you want to quick bite, they have lots of options, and a killer Impossible Burger!
Next you have to make a stop at Insomnia Cookies best cookies in town by far!
And of course if you’re fortunate enough to be in town when a great event is going on one of the best venues is the State Farm Arena, we are always there catching the game, a show or a concert!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone who deserves credit and recognition in my story and journey as a new business owner is my husband. Ever since I brought up the idea of starting a home baking business to him he has been so supportive and encouraging.
On days when I’m tired from work and the kids and I don’t feel like working on the business, he’s always there to give me that extra push and reminding me of what I’m working towards. He has invested in me more than anyone else and has even mentioned my business to friends in hopes that they would be potential clients. Not to mention he’s the ultimate test taster!
