We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel NR Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel NR, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Innovation and creativity is what I’ve always utilized with everything I’ve done as CEO of my own company, NR Entertainment Inc. It’s critical to my brand to be able to think ahead all the time, especially being in the entertainment industry. Being a visionary as well has brought my brand to levels that it would’ve never been able to reach if it wasn’t for that. An example is when I started my career in the sound system industry, which originated in Kingston, Jamaica, and as a Canadian, I fell deeply in love with it through my father’s influence. Therefore, instead of simply mimicking all that was already done by primarily marketing myself as a Reggae Sound System selector. I marketed myself as a professional disc jockey, which overtime, I created an audience that followed my ideas outside of djing and now into my latest creation of my book, film and soundtrack.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never ever gave up. There were times when I felt that the world was coming down on me, but I had to brace myself and hold on tighter to my dreams. I chose this path because I love having the freedom to do what I love in order to make a living and build wealth. By staying spiritually grounded and by practicing a simple affirmation: “God got me” kept my spirits up all the time, even during the hard times. The number one lesson I’ve learned that has always stayed with me is the journey of entrepreneurship isn’t for the weak heartened. In order to be successful, you need to have support that is willing to sacrifice so you can focus on the end result. Often, that comes down to who really wants you to win and be great. Its crucial to know that in the beginning, no matter how great you think, your business, ideas or products are your going to have to lose first and that means simply not having any money. During these times, you have to embrace the struggle and continue to pursue it. I pursued my dreams from one country to the next something that I will always share with the world, that where there’s a will there’s a way. You have to be willing to jump and let go of anything that keeps you back so you can be successful. I am want to be known as a highly successful businessman that won by not giving up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
– The first spot would definitely be Little Five Points at the record store Criminal Records, doing some good old-fashioned digging for vinyl from there. If it’s baseball season, a Braves game is a must. That experience needs to be seen most definitely. After that, throughout the week, Six Flags Over Georgia, Atlanta Civil Rights Museum, Big Daddy’s on Old National Hwy, Dellia Jerk Palace in Decatur, check out Fox Theatre for a movie or performance. Tyler Perry Studios is a definite must visit as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been blessed to have support throughout the years of my career by individuals, books and organizations that have all contributed throughout my journey and some, as well, that have stuck with me through the highs and the lows. Special shout out to: God above for health, strength and courage, Natalie Ninja (The world’s greatest business woman), DJ Bradley of Typhoon Sound, Chozen of Treajah Isle Records, DJ Wiz of the Wizology Show, Dr F.
