We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Carae and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jess, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor is to never give up and to stay on your toes. It’s hard running a business especially if you’re doing it by yourself. For me personally, there has been so many times I wanted to give up, especially when COVID hit, and I was forced to close for months. That’s when staying on your toes is also important because things happen out of nowhere and being able to recover quickly and having new/different ideas will help your business stand out. Every business has highs and lows, it’s how you work with those that will determine your success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been passionate about the beauty industry since I was a child. Makeup was something I’ve always wanted to be involved with as an adult. I started in high-school doing makeup for friends when we had school dances and events. As soon as I graduated in 2014 I enrolled in Cosmetology school and have been grinding ever since!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not let what anyone says stop you. The beauty industry is so much more dramatic than a lot of people realize and most people in the industry feel like they need to compete to be the best in the business, and will talk a lot about what other people are doing and whether they think it’s a good idea or not. It’s not a competition though. There is enough money out here for everyone to eat. So once you remove the mindset of competing and move it to supporting those around you, customers notice. I’ve realized the more talking you do, the more you have to prove. I just do what I love because it makes me happy and my clients can see that and they love it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to take someone out in Grand Rapids, I would do lunch at Rockwells, the cocktails and food are to DIE for it is my favorite restaurant in town. The Grand Rapids Art Museum has tons of unique exhibitions. There’s so much art in this city I could spend a week showing it to people. On a weekend I’d take someone to a new club that recently opened called “Ambiance”. With the aesthetic and vibe that place has to offer, you can’t help but have a great time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my daughter. I quit my full time job with benefits when I was 6 months pregnant because I had a revelation of “if your child was in your position and unhappy, what would you want them to do” I dove in head first and haven’t looked back. She gave me the push I needed to make the jump and she continues to inspire me daily.

I’m also surrounded by amazing friends and family. They encourage me when I need it most or even if I didn’t realize I needed it at all. They promote me 24/7 and I really wouldn’t be where I am without them and their loyalty and support of me and my brand.
