We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerrell aka Rell Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerrell aka Rell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I decided to start my own company, I was already making my employer close to 300k a year. It was at that moment when I realized I could do the same with my own company.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have a catering company called LFB Catering also known as Love At First Bite Catering. What sets me apart is being able to do the smaller things better than anyone else. I’m proud that I stayed consistent with my work ethic. I worked hard for everything that I have.
I’m from Canton, MS where absolutely nothing is given to you. Canton made a hustler out of me. When I was younger, I use to go fishing and clean whatever I caught and sell it to a few of my teachers at school. When I got to college, I use to cook and sell burgers at the dorm after we had room check because the restaurants off campus were closed. I made it happen with a George Foreman Grill. Anything, legally, that I could do to make money, I did it.
My dad had his own painting and sheetrock company. So I got a chance to watch a black man start and build from the bottom up. With hard work and dedication, his company generated close to half a million dollars a year. Seeing him work so hard with only a dollar and a dream pushed me to do the same.
No, it wasn’t easy but I never worried because I knew I had the drive to make things happen. Any problem that came my way, I handled it head first. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to slow down, understand your surroundings, and listen. I use to cut ppl off because I felt they didn’t know anything when in reality, if you stop and listen you might learn something.
I want the world to know that LFB Catering believes in quality not quantity. We get the job done!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I don’t get out much so I really couldn’t tell you but they should definitely try Cafe Bourbon. Shout out to my ppl, Jonessa and Markel. I’ve had a chance to meet a few people since being here. I’ve developed a list because you can literally see so many celebrities walking around in Atlanta.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes! I have a list and I don’t want to forget anyone but to any and everybody that helped me along my journey, thank you! I did want to shout out my pops, specifically, for showing me how to start from nothing. When he came to Mississippi with my mom, Katie Young, he had a regular job and decided to go into business for himself. That always inspired me. My mother has also been there for me and has taught me a lot because she’s also an amazing cook. She always tell me that if you cook with a bad attitude the food will not come out right. My aunt, Annie, stays on me til this very day about keeping everything in order and she has my back no matter what I do. Also, my big cousin from Philly, Dr. Ellisa Young. She’s always praying and encouraging me to be great no matter what. I love all of my family so shout out to them. Shout out to my brother, Banks, and my cousin, Fernando, for keeping me together mentally.
