We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Silas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking hits home for me, it is the reason I am here today. There have been so many days that I had to choose and decide what options were the best for me and my business. Although most days I may have wanted to go with what I knew – what I was comfortable with – I knew that the only way for me to achieve every goal that I set for myself was to always bet my last dollar on me. After that, I learned that you have to get uncomfortable to eventually be comfortable.
The most important lesson that taking risks has taught me is that uncomfortability warrants growth. You will waste so much time debating whether it’s the right decision or not, but it is a proven fact sometimes you just have to take the RISK ! You’ll thank yourself in the long run.
For example, Pop up shops to promote my brand: I have always loved the idea of being apart of one, but I was always so afraid I would leave without making any sales. I took a risk, and at my very first pop up shop, I made well over a $1000. If we set the thought of money aside, if I had never taken a risk with that pop-up shop, I would’ve never known how beneficial they are for the personal experience of selling myself and building new relationships. If I go out there and don’t make a dime, those are the things that really matter.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
By no means is running a business an easy task. I’m still learning new things as I grow, and each day I’m faced with new challenges I must overcome. I am a firm believer that “quitting is not an option” What sets me apart is the fact that I built my business off of the mindset that quitting is for the weak and I am built a little differently. This was heavily instilled in me by my late father Tommie Walker, and he simply wouldn’t have it any other way. Many days I wanted to quit, but I had to pray and ask God for the strength to carry me through. I knew it would be rewarding, but they don’t tell you about the challenges you have to overcome trying to run a business. Keep striving, keep grinding, keep hustling – SEE YOU AT WORK!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Restaurants- Poor Calvins, Oceanair, Mary’s Mack, American deil.
Hangout/ Bars- Garden room, gold room, midtown bowl, Twain’s,
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My amazing family and friends. The support they have shown me is everything a small business could ask for and more. From staying up late folding shirts, to wiping my tears from disappointment, to success, I could never repay them for the love they have poured into Hollyhustle. Major shout out to my honey Rob – he bought everything I needed to get started as a Christmas gift a few years back. I was very upset about the gift (I was for sure expecting something a little bit more exciting!) Along with the equipment was a letter attached that stated “from this point forward we will be giving gifts of substance” At that moment, it went over my head. My mind wasn’t open to the idea, so I was still thinking small. It is with pleasure that I tell you today it is by far the best gift I have ever received.
