We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success is the drive to be a good steward of all that has been entrusted to us. By doing so, we have built a brand that has taken us farther than we would have imagined in this adventure and allowed us to pay it forward to others in the community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others in our trade is the desire to empower and equip clients to be able to complete projects on their own. If you took a traditional heavy equipment rental company and merged it with a traditional grading and land clearing company, you would end up with Mays Tractor Service.

Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to complete projects for clients and seeing the smile on their face when I’m done, but there is something special about helping people realize that they don’t have to pay a contractor thousands of dollars for every project they need to complete.

I think I am most proud of the growth the company has had simply by our clients referring us to other people. We have never used paid advertising and have continued to grow over time. This tells me we are doing something right!

I got to where I am today largely in part because people took a chance on me when I was just a young kid who could barely read a tape measure. The passion for operating heavy equipment has been in me since I was a baby, I just embraced it and made a career out of it.

It has not been an easy process getting to where I am now. People see you on top of the mountain, but they never see you on the climb. You have to be somewhat tolerant of risk when running a business, especially one with large financial commitments. Some days my banker thinks I work for the cartel, and other days they think I should apply for food stamps. It has been a fun adventure that pushes me daily to grow professionally and personally. When challenges come up, I pause and pray about it. I am a firm believer that God will steer the boat as long as I am willing to row. He has never failed me.

I have learned a lot during this journey. One of the biggest lessons I like to share is to always pay it forward. Whether we make charitable contributions around the local community, or take time off work to share our passion for the trades and heavy equipment during Touch-A-Truck events, we always pay it forward.

The one thing I would want people to remember me for is the passion and energy I bring to sharing our trade with the next generation. While the business end generates revenue, my passion is always sharing the joy of being an operating engineer with people. I never want someone to think they can’t be successful or have fun simply because they don’t have a college degree.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a tough one! There are so many choices. I love being on the water, so we would have to hit Jackson Lake on the jet skis. For food, anything non-chain related and locally owned is usually my go-to. Entertainment would be a mix of Zoo Atlanta, a show at the Fox or Alliance Theatre, and the Georgia aquarium.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I have to give God the credit for guiding me to where I am in life. He is the true owner of the business and I attribute any success we have to Him.

Additionally, without my wife, the business would not have been able to grow and flourish like it has. Her constant support and understanding of the crazy work schedule makes it all possible. She juggles helping out with the company while being a full time stay at home mom to our children. I truly would not be able to do it without her.
