We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalisa Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalisa, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My children’s book “In His Absence I Can Still Feel His Presence” helps children to cope with grief through the loss of their loved ones. It is an biblical-based book that is made into a journal, structured to alway have. This book is step one into helping children understand the passing of their loved ones through a little girl name Rose on how she loss her father at the age of eleven. This book shares a real life story, scriptures and encouragement to help your child get through their loss. They may also jot down how they are feeling inside and add pictures of their loved ones. During this difficult time I hope my children’s book can bring joy back to their faces. I have received good feedback from children whom I have helped during their time of bereavement.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My book journey was a easy one. I went through a publishing company called Blueberry Illustrations and at first I was hesitant because it was my first children’s book and it was a risky choice that I had to make being that they were out of the country. I read the reviews and decided to continue with the publishing company. It was an amazing experience, their services included illustrations, cover designs, book layout, editing, and promotions on all major platforms. My illustrations were so nicely done I relived the whole moment again. There was an image in the book of a little girl sitting in front of the casket and it brought back so many memories. It was so beautiful and realistic. I enjoyed working with Blueberry Illustrations. I had my first book signing November 17, 2019 and it was a success to see so many people to come out to support and purchase a book. Since then I have been attending author events, speaking engagement for schools at career day, and events for vendors. I have been a guest many different podcast platforms and radio stations to speak about my book. I was inspired enough to start my very own podcast show entitle “Loss and grief with Jalisa Rose” and I had phenomenal man and woman to come on and speak about their loss to encourage others during their bereavement. It is a great thing to know your purpose here on earth and it is even better when you see people who it has helped. I am very thankful and I am excited to see what God has in store for my future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would bring my friend to downtown atlanta and walk around downtown in the shopping centers and go to a good restaurant to eat and have drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father is whom I dedicate this book to. I remember like it was yesterday seeing all my family coming to tell me about his passing. I lost a great father and a even greater best-friend at the age of 11 but one thing I knew was that he stills lives inside of me and I can always make him proud. My book title came from me knowing that in his absence I can always make him proud because his presence is felt. Anytime I feel like I want to give up and I feel that sense of motivation I know that is my father pushing me through the finish line. So this book is in honor of my father to keep uplifting his name and to keep his name in the light.
