We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahnya Gilkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jahnya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I wanted to do something in fashion. In highschool I started my clothing brand Planet 47 and in the beginning I was excited; I got a lot of great feedback and it was going great. With me doing everything myself it is really hard but i always make sure to stay organized and keep pushing! Starting a business is not easy but if it’s something you love it’ll be worth it in the long run. Creating my wardrobe styling business wasn’t hard because I knew what I had to do and how to do things. Now look at me 4 businesses in at 20 years old thriving.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up i taught myself how to sew in middle school. I started but upcycling clothing and turning it into other types of clothing. For example a oversized hoodie into sweatpants. I believe what sets me apart from other is my outlook on life, my age and the fact that i am multi-talented. As a Brooklyn born/Trini raised African American I got to see the styles and ways of life for both americans and west indians. I look at life as a blessing and I believe that everyone can be successful and bring their unique views to the same industries. I am only 20 years old and I have accomplished a lot both in life and in the fashion industry. Growing up looking for jobs or programs to join i always got told that I was overqualified. I am talented in so many things and industries that it gives me the opportunity to be great in all aspects and help many people that wants to learn from me. I am very proud of everything I have accomplish especially because I am still a full time college student. It was not easy getting to where I am today but I always took time to reflect and pray about everything I wanted to accomplish. Never give up because everything happens for a reason. Someone else’s timeline for success will be different from yours so focus on you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from New York I love walking around downtown brooklyn and sitting by the water so we would definitely do that. We would also go shopping in soho and on 34th street. A few restaurants we would go to is BK9, Nostrand Station, Lemongrass etc. Going to museums and art popups are great for a calm pop out and instagram pictures.
I lived in ATL off and on in my younger years of my childhood so I don’t remember much places but I would definitely go to the aquarium and then Rocking Crab for some great seafood!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout Stylingbychi, my family and all those who support me throughout my journey!
