We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacqueline Nickerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacqueline, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Prior to starting My Son’s Closet LLC, I literally dreamed about it. In the dream I was working in the store. I saw the colors, the logo, everything. At that time I had one son around the age of 4. I’d go shopping for him and have a hard time finding clothing I liked for him. The selections were limited for boys and barely any variety. The children’s section would be 75% for girls and the boys section was like an afterthought. Prior to having my son I never noticed because I had a lot of nieces. It blew my mind because you have to dress boys too. So, why were there not more options? It wouldn’t be until after the birth of my second son years later where I put the business plan I’d written into action and started my business online.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Son’s Closet is an online clothing and accessories store just for boys. We offer a variety of styles and sizes for boys age newborn to teen. I’m most proud that my youngest son gets to be a part of the business by modeling some of the clothing for our website. I allow him to pick out what he wants to wear and then we have a photo shoot. Having him take interest in the clothing and being able to express himself through fashion makes me happy. I want My Son’s Closet to be our legacy so him playing a role makes me overjoyed. An important lesson I learned is to talk about your business and to ask questions. Talking about my business openly with people has led to some good advice and business connections. In trying to figure out the best way to advertise I was given some tools to use that have helped me schedule my ads along with hire professionals to help me with larger campaigns. From these social media meetups I have gained a wealth of knowledge from people who are already experiencing the levels of success I’m trying to attain. Believing in the saying that the only stupid question is the one that was never asked. There’s nothing new under the sun so if I’m having difficulty with something I’m sure there is someone that has already figured out what I need. I want the world to know that My Son’s Closet is going to be a household name. I birthed this company out of my love for my sons and my passion for fashion. I’ve started taking fashion sewing classes so that I can learn more about fabrics and styles. I want parents to be able to find all of their sons clothing needs at my store. Shopping for boys should be easy and affordable. Boys should be given diversity in their fashion choices. They should be able to express their individuality through their fashion style. Although boys have less clothing type options they should be able to buy fun, trendy and colorful clothing. There is a need for uniformity at times but if they don’t have to wear uniforms they should have a plethora of options. Whether they have a classic style or are into the latest fads they should be given every option. My Son’s Closet is committed to dressing your sons in styles they will love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would eat at a few of my favorite spots like Grumps for breakfast, G & M for no filler crab cakes. Visit the African American Museum and The National Portrait Gallery. Go to National Harbor to enjoy some night time Jazz and more good food. LIVE Casino is great place to hang, good food and entertainment. Do a little shopping at the Outlet Mall. Go to the Amish Market for dessert and pizza pretzels. Finally venture out to Baltimore Harbor.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt I’m going to shout out my husband. He is not only my life partner for over two decades , the father of our amazing sons, but my business partner. He had lost his job and I told him I thought it was time to start my business. No hesitation whatsoever he gave me the money to get started and filed all the necessary paperwork to make this a legitimate business. His background is accounting so he keeps our books. He believes in me and my vision. The support he gives me is unwavering. There’s no way I could do this successfully without him. He has since been hired back by the company that let him go and still lends a hand whenever I need him. He is a magnificent role model to our sons in showing them how to love and respect a wife along with how to balance work and family.
