We had the good fortune of connecting with Hunter Blalock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hunter, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always felt drawn to art of all kinds, music, drawings, paintings, architecture, books, everything. I’ve also always been a big dreamer, every since I was a kid. I always wanted to be something different, one day I grew up & realized that you can chase what you want in life & no one can stop you from trying.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a songwriter first & for most. I take pride in taking simple words & concepts & putting them together in a way that hopefully moves someone. I wanna make people feel things good or bad. Pretty or ugly. Happy or sad. I hope my art makes folks feel.
As far as getting to where I am professionally, I am nowhere near the top of the food chain, in my eyes I’m still getting started. I got to this current point in my career by an endless hustle, always grinding day & night to find the next show, next song, next opportunity. It’s not easy, of course anything good doesn’t come easy in most cases.
Some lessons I’ve learned along the way is to never give up & to not take no for an answer. If you want something bad enough there is always a way to make it happen. Take the 1000 no’s for the 1 yes. It’s worth it.
I want people to think of my songs & know they’re real. I want them to feel like they can relate. Like they might know a person or be the person in the story.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in the city is probably the same as every songwriters favorite spot in the city, Eddie’s Attic. Wether it’s playing or watching a show there. I love it. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give all the credit to my wife for believing in me while I chase a dream most folks call far fetched. She has always pushed me to follow my heart.
I would also like to give my 2 band mates credit for being willing to always climb in the van & tour, you don’t find many road dawgs like the ones I’ve found.
