We had the good fortune of connecting with Godwin Bortey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Godwin, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Kid Bully is our voice. We believe the everyone is entitled to their opinion, and so are we. Our designs reflects our ideologies and what we believe in. Some people may agree and some may not, but everyone will be able to know where we stand.

What should our readers know about your business?
Kid Bully is a lifestyle brand that started in 2013. It rose from an idea I had while I was in college after seeing kids (myself included) and adults bullied at either school or the workplace because of their ideas, their looks, or their way of life. We believe everyone is entitled to their opinions and should have. a right to be who they are. So, we decided to be the voice for the voiceless. Our designs reflect our thoughts and way of life. Some may not like it, and some may, but you will know where we stand. Our stance and our voice are what I’m most proud of. Our supporters naturally attract to the brand because of stance, which allows us to stay true to ourselves.

I believe I can always improve my business acumen, but mentorship, self-pursuit of knowledge, and determination is what got me here today. It was not easy to overcome barriers. The greatest barrier is money. Luckily for me, I was able to network my way into some important rooms which allowed me to understand how to create capital to keep the dream alive. Also, as a first generation Ghanaian American, I had to overcome cultural barriers. My parents are not into the arts as a way of providing for a family. They believe in concrete professions like a lawyer or a doctor. Explaining to them about my vision was a bit challenging at times, but I’m making it my mission to open their world and see the magic in being an Artist.

We are bold, confident, and even mischievous, and our marketing reflects that. Our copy should communicate trust and be consistent across all channels. It is both intelligent and professional, simple but not boring. Be actionable, be conversational, be engaging and be innovative. Our voice isn’t a hard sell but empowering and encouraging our customer through product benefits to help the product sell itself. Our voice is witty, and always intelligent. Our voice will be heard by the world. We are here to bridge the gap amongst the culture through a fashionable lifestyle.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Uniondale, NY, located in Long Island. I love to eat so I’d take a friend to Backyard BBQ in Freeport, NK Restaurant in East Meadow, or Dunns River Lounge in Rockville Centre just to name a few. I like to keep it simple and culturally pleasing. Then we can go to Garden city lanes to bowl, the movies to catch the latest flick, Top Golf out east, or we can head into the city to go check out some lounges. The great thing about Long Island is that we aren’t too far away from the city, so we have the best of both worlds.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my parents, whose courage and strong rooted values helped raise me. I know it wasn’t easy uprooting from Ghana, raising a child in a whole new culture, but they made it seem effortless.
