We had the good fortune of connecting with Gianni Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gianni, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The most important thing that I have done as a parent, was realizing that I had to relearn parenting. We only know what we were taught growing up, and that can often be filled with a lot of things that we have not healed from yet. I grew up in an extremely tyrant household where I never had a voice, and it really impacted me negatively as an adult. Once I realized that every way I respond to my daughter I am impacting her mental health, my way of parenting shifted. If I admit when I make a mistake and let her have her own voice, she will have a better chance at going into interviews confidently, asking for a raise etc…Yes creating generational wealth is very important, but you have to realize that you are raising a little human that will one day have to go out into the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Fro.ology apart from the over saturated market of natural hair care, is our formulas. I created every formula for Fro.ology through trial and error within a span of 3-6 months. Every beauty brand says they offer clean and non-toxic products, but majority of them use a highly toxic preservative called phenoxyethanol. It is a skin irritant that is banned in the UK, and can absolutely not be used on children under 3 years old. Fro.ology only uses safe preservatives, and organic essential oils as fragrance.
Our biggest accomplishment is that we have over 800 five star reviews. Focusing on the customers that I already had, has been one of my smartest business decisions.
It was not always easy, and it took me a year to actually make an income. However, the fact that I am so passionate about business, kept a positive attitude, and continued to work on my craft every single day, is the reason I think my brand is successful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is so funny because I actually need someone to tell me the hottest places to go in Atlanta. I left Atlanta to go to Howard in when I was 17 in 2006, and I just moved back in 2019. I could tell you everywhere to go in DC but not my own city lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad for sure. He drove 10 hours to Maryland to help me move my stuff back to Atlanta to start my business. He has been my biggest supporter, handing out my business cards, telling me Fro.ology needs to be in Sephora. He was there when I had one order a month to 100 orders in a week. I would not be where I am without him.
