We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaurav & Grishma Batra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gaurav & Grishma, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Both of us have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and we wanted to have the control to make decisions that directly impact our community and our lifestyle. It felt like it will be the best use of our time and talent to pour our energy in building a brand that can grow, instead of being boxed in a job with limited influence. By starting our own business and a business model to meet our vision, we have been able to achieve just that and we are hopeful for future opportunities.

What should our readers know about your business?
The West Venue is a premier event space located in sought after neighborhood of West Midtown Atlanta. The West Venue has two unique halls with capacity of 500. We are very excited to be able to provide both traditional as well industrial style spaces under the same roof. Most unique features of our space is the grand chandelier that sets the tone of elegance and the most technologically advanced 1000 sq. ft. projection system. We started this business with the mindset of filling the gap that existed in the market, but none of it came easy. As we were getting ready to open the doors, we were hit by the city shutdowns due to Covid-19 pandemic. We had to reach deep within and persevere through all the expenses without any revenue. This slower period in our new business turned out to be a blessing in a way as it forced us to understand our potential customers’ needs and make long term adjustments in our business model to serve them better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is fun multicultural city and there are events happening around town any given night of the week. We love Buckhead and Midtown; however we are gravitating towards all the new breweries, bars and restaurants in west midtown near our new business The West Venue. West midtown is converting old warehouses, so architecture and ambiance is always interesting. Some of our favorite spots to take take out of town friends are breweries at The Works, restaurants at The Buckhead Village, shopping at Ponce City market and walking the beltline.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are incredibly blessed to have the support of our family throughout our lives and especially during the journey of starting our business. Over the years there have been many books that have inspired us, but ones that stand out the most and ones which have helped us take this leap of faith are: ‘Lean In’ by Sheryl Sandberg and ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter. Standout quote from ‘Lean In’ book is “We hold ourselves back by lowering our own expectations of what we can achieve.” This has helped us take more risks and be able to look beyond current roadblocks. The book ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ taught us the mindset needed to obtain financial independence.
