We had the good fortune of connecting with Ella Vance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ella, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
A good friend of mine asked me this one day years ago & since then I live by it on a daily basis – “Why worry twice?” It’s fairly simple but to me it means, why put yourself through unnecessary stress until you actually have a reason to be stressed. Cross that bridge when you get there. If you worry before you have reason to, you’re essentially worrying twice… so don’t!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create custom, handmade jewelry ranging from earrings, bracelets to necklaces. Each piece is personally crafted by me & only me which I believe makes the jewelry even more special & one of a kind. I find that making jewelry is almost therapeutic, being able to take a ball of clay, a collection of beads or a spool of wire & create it into something that is custom & personalized. I would love to say that I am 100% where I’d like to be professionally but as a very driven & creative person, I am constantly looking to better myself & my product. Owning a business comes with its ups and downs, it forces you to be patient & roll with the punches. I have been offered opportunities to mass produce for large boutiques & even department stores. However, I have had to decline the offers as I felt they diminished the quality of the product and went against my overall goal which is to produce unique pieces at an affordable price point. However, I am proud to say after 7 years of owning ellaZjewels, I still truly love the creative process & I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share my gift with others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The wonderful thing about Atlanta is that it has something for everyone. The options are endless when it comes to great foodie spots, places to people watch, shopping etc. Let’s talk dining, the itinerary would absolutely include – Tiny Lous for a yummy brunch, Le Colonial for the scene, Redbird for a really good neighborhood vibe, Storico Fresco or Forza Storico for incredible Italian, Antico for pizza & vino, for a fancier vibe and incredible meal Bacchanalia is top on my list, lastly The Garden Room is the perfect spot for the perfect nightcap! As far as local hot spots – The BeltLine, Ponce City Market, Halcyon & The Avalon would definitely make it onto the itinerary. These are all great places to walk around outside, shop, people watch, grab a quick bite & most importantly enjoy my best friends company!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my story to my family, in particular to both of my grandmothers. I was very fortunate to have known both of them & grateful for the many traits passed down. My paternal grandmother, Fay whom we lost last year at the age of 92 owned her own floral & plant rental company. She recognized a need for flower & plant rentals and was one of the first to offer those services. Her creativity flowed through her joy of plants & gardening. Her passion & knowledge for flowers & creating arrangements was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I believe Fay played a large role when it comes to my entrepreneurial mindset. My maternal grandmother, Zita whose name inspired my middle name & my companies name, ellaZjewels. She is an incredibly talented & creative artist. After raising her 6 children she returned to The University of Mississippi to complete her Bachelors in Fine Arts. She has been one of the biggest supporters of ellaZjewels & I must say she wears the jewelry better than anyone! I believe that both of these women have played a role in my story by sharing their talents. Whether that be from an entrepreneurial standpoint or a creative, I am blessed to have their genes and will continue to shine through them.
