We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwan Abrams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dwan, how do you think about risk?
Charles Lindbergh once stated: “I don’t believe in taking unnecessary risks, but a life without risk isn’t worth living.” I subscribe to that. As far as I am concerned, you need to take risks, challenge yourself, and try harder if you want to grow stronger and become better. Too often we base our decisions on emotion rather than logic. We incorrectly assume that there’s a direct correlation between our fear level and the risk level.

When I decided to leave my job in corporate America, my family thought I was making a mistake. They could not fathom why I would walk away from a job that afforded me such a comfortable lifestyle. I had medical and dental benefits; a 401k plan, and stock options. In addition to that, I lived in a spacious home; drove a luxurious European car; traveled, and had more clothes and shoes than I could wear. I even had a housekeeper. The truth of the matter is that none of that mattered to me.

At an early age, my mother told me, “Don’t ever let people you work for feel as though you need that job.” That stuck with me. I would go to work feeling as though I did not need that job. In my mind, a job was expendable. I know many people think they are expendable, or feel as though their job treats them as though they are, but the truth is there are other opportunities. Opportunities exist whether we get another job or create the opportunity ourselves.

If we truly understood how to calculate risks, we would know which risks are worth taking, and we would be a lot less fearful about taking them. Learning to take healthy risks can open new doors and improve your life. The operative word being healthy. Clearly, not all risks are good risks. I strongly suggest only taking calculated risks that can truly improve your life; not just the risks that feel good now.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the owner of Luxe Spa Mechele in Conyers, Georgia. I decided to open a spa, because I believe people should make themselves a priority. When my clients come into the spa, they immediately feel welcome. The atmosphere is super relaxed and chill. It’s not uncommon for our clients to fall asleep while receiving treatments.

We also establish sincere and authentic connections with our clients. Our clients become repeat clients because we listen to them and consistently provide top-notch service. One thing that sets Luxe Spa Mechele apart from other spas is that our staff has advanced degrees in psychology. Our clients don’t know that walking in the door; they just feel comfortable talking to us about whatever is going on in their lives or the world around them. They feel heard. Aside from listening, we care.

As a business owner, I’m committed to doing what is necessary for the client to achieve optimal results and provide the opportunity of self-renewal.. When clients visit Luxe Spa Mechele, we want to give them an escape from the stresses of a busy lifestyle.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my best friends came to Atlanta for the first time, and she stayed with me for a week. One of the places we absolutely had to go was Slutty Vegan. We went there for lunch and it did not disappoint. The energy was high; the music was a vibe, and the food… The food was delicious and worth the money.

SkyView Atlanta at night is electric. There’s so much life in the city. Music, people, and lighted horse and carriage rides makes it a fun time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, Gwendolyn Harper, has been inspirational in my life. As a single teenage mother, she defied the odds. Thanks to my mother, I learned the value of education, and how to conduct myself as a lady. Having a strong mother who encouraged me along the way gave me the maturity and confidence to make good decisions and trust myself. My mother and I are both veterans; something I’m really proud of.
