We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Vickery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I am a Dietitian Nutritionist by trade, but I have always enjoyed creating digital designs and websites. I remember in graduate school I even made a website that served as a digital resume (which was not typical at that time!). When I started my nutrition private practice, Vickery Wellness, I found that I was spending (and enjoying) more of my time creating digital materials and constantly updating my website. When others discovered that I had done all of my website and branding designs myself, they started asking for my help with their projects. That then sort of snowballed into more and more inquiries and now I have been able to open my own website design and branding business, Declet Designs. I have seriously had a blast helping others with their branding and website design. It’s so much fun having this creative outlet and helping others create a brand and website experience that speaks to their ideal client.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to say that I’m an RD by day and a website designer by night!

I found that so many of my fellow weight-inclusive dietitian colleagues were struggling with their website designs AND struggling to find someone who understood their approach. When other website and brand designers hear ‘nutrition’ they immediately think of weight loss and pictures of fruit and measuring tape. But, that is the exact opposite of what we look for in our weight-inclusive designs.

We strive to create designs that are inclusive and representative of the diverse people and bodies that we serve. It really helps the business owner to have so much less stress knowing that I understand their mission and values.

Was it easy to get to this point? In the overall picture of my life, no. But in the sense of when you truly enjoy your work and it shows, then people notice! And when the word spreads, it does tend to help get more inquiries because of the trust you have built with your audience.

I would want the world to know that I truly love doing website and branding design and love working with those who share an inclusive approach as part of their mission and values.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always love going to the aquarium, so I would definitely include that in our itinerary. Specifically at a less crowded time so that we could really enjoy the ambiance of being around such wonderful creatures. I would also include the Fernbank Museum since I have a serious love of dinosaurs and all things science. I love trying new vegan/vegetarian restaurants, so I would definitely want to try SluttyVegan and Cafe Sunflower.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I really credit my husband for pushing me to make the jump into creating my website and branding business. Since I’m traditionally trained as a dietitian, I felt like I couldn’t possibly move into the website and branding world. But, he saw how much I enjoyed it and how it made me light up and encouraged me to pursue it.
