We had the good fortune of connecting with D’varia Hurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D’varia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because it was painful not doing so. I consider myself an oddity because I LOVE science and constantly learning about the world. I love art and creating just an equally… It has taken years to finally realize that I require a balance of both to feel fulfilled.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a full extension of the embodiment of my creative being. At times it feels like a relentless being within that I have to constantly feed to lull. I think that is the driving passion that has been behind this creative journey. I am most proud of the unapologetic BLACKNESS of my art that depicts not only my experience but also of those that look like me.
The journey has been self fulfilling and lonely as well. Being able to fulfill your creative passion is unlike any other feeling I have felt. There are times when I’m exhausted, fingers are swollen, and its paint splatters galore but when what is in your head comes to life…..it’s just so much. Some of my relationships are strained because very few people understand how important being able to create is for me.
Life lessons I have learned are to be sure even when you’re not sure. I joke about it but art is the equivalent to divulging intimate secrets to strangers lol It takes guts and confidence to create and not be bothered.
Secondly, get the deposit up front! It may seem very basic but for awhile I lost a lot of money doing commissions in my earlier days and not collecting a deposit!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend and I could on a week long trip of my choosing it would most definitely have to be somewhere like New York because I can not think of seven days of things to do in my hometown.
I would want to visit the major art museums because I like to survey art from different periods and see collections as a whole. The next day would be vinyl record shopping to enhance my superb collection. I believe when you travel you should only eat things that you are not accustomed to so I am open to trying foods from all cultures and ethnicities.
Finally I’d tell my bestfriend that I’ll see them at Thanksgiving because I used those seven days to get that brownstone and now I live there.
(Speaking it into existence as my mom says lol)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All those that have supported me and the art most definitely!!!
