We had the good fortune of connecting with Dre Marquis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dre, how do you think about risk?
I have been taught, and even noticed in some instances that successful people take big risks. Yes, risks can lead to failures. Often times many of us acknowledge that out of fear. However, optimism guides you to the mindset that you can also succeed. In my life personally, I have taken several risks that have assisted with my growth. One in particular would be the risk to move to Atlanta from Chicago. I literally dropped everything. No connections, no friends, no family down here. Just me. And it has been challenging in just the few short months I have been here but I am truly grateful that I made this move. I know with my faith I will be successful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an actor originally from the South Side of Chicago currently based in Atlanta, GA. I have had the pleasure to work on shows such as Chicago PD and Chicago Fire as well as many plays throughout the Chicago land area. I received my BA in Theatre from Alabama State University and my MFA in Acting from DePaul University. I am extremely proud of the lessons I have learned on and off set and in and our of classrooms. I am represented by Hayes Talent Agency. I love this craft and the fact that it allows actors and audience members and viewers alike to escape the worries of the world and the tough and trying times we are experiencing. How did I get here? Train train train! You wouldn’t want a plumber that only knows some of his job. Nor would you want a doctor like that either. Everything takes practice and training and I have spent the last years doing just that. And still doing it to this day. This journey and industry is not easy to navigate. In life, there are a hundreds of paths that get to the same destination. The goal, I repeat, the goal is to remember why you started. Your WHY. if that “why” is strong then your motivation will match it even if you fall off a little because we all do. Two important things I can take away from this journey so far are always lead with kindness and ego can slow your tempo. Don’t let it. When stuff feels like its about to hit the fan “Inhale. Exhale. Prevail.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whew! Chicago has it all! From Deep Dish Pizza to a great time at Wrigley Field. I would say some of my favorite places to check out are Batters and Berries, Flacos Tacos on Chicago Ave for bomb drinks, Giordanos, Millineum Park for a good time and place to relax and soak up sun and so much more! There are bars located all over the city and no one bar is like the next. I say explore the city! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Michelle Hayes for always looking out for me and being the best agent ever. To my mother, brother and grandfather, thank you for always cheering me on. To my grandmother, my angel, i know you’re proud of me and I hope I’m making you proud too. To any and every single person that has supported me, watched a clip of my work, watched an episode, sponsored a class, gave me words of encouragement, any individual that has shown me the reason to keep going I say thank you. I wouldn’t even be at this point without you.
