We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Emmett (Dr. E) Shaffer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Emmett (Dr. E), how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Parent Pilot, LLC is the combination of my two passions parenting and flying airplanes. In my work with parents and students as an educator and therapist for more than two decades, I found my passion and life’s work in supporting parents through the turbulent but joyous years of parenting. When you become a parent, it does not come with a “how to” book, so The Parent Pilot gives parents the next best thing, a flight plan, which in the world of flying, is the way pilots navigate their flights. Similarly, the parenting flight plan gives parents the supportive resources to parent with courage, compassion, and connection. The Parent Pilot resources include Parent Coaching and Parent Education all focused on helping parents become the parent they envision themselves to be. The Parent Pilot’s vision is, “To be the Leading Parenting Resource on the Planet.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have served the education and mental health communities for more than two decades. I believe what differentiates the services that The Parent Pilot, LLC provides is my deep and cultured experience in K-12 education, non-profit leadership, and mental health. During my tenure in education, I have served as a teacher, school counselor, school principal, executive director for a counseling staff of 400 school counselors, and area superintendent leading 26 school principals, and responsible for 30,000 students for the fourth largest school system in the state of GA. I also served as Vice President of Education for United Way of Metro Atlanta where I was responsible for recommending and distributing 15 million dollars to community agencies that served the educational needs of students in the metro Atlanta area. Finally, I have supported the hundreds of parents and teens in private practice as a Mental Health Therapist and Parenting Coach for 15 years. Perseverance, faith, and grit have help me to accomplish my goals. Yes, I have had to overcome some challenges. I dropped out of two colleges after receiving failing grades. It was by chance that I participated in a study, as a college dropout that would ultimately allow me to be diagnosed with dyslexia (read my story on theparentpilot.com/about). This allowed me to understand the skills I needed to build and be successful in college. As a result, I have received multiple degrees including a Doctorate degree in Education. I also accomplished my childhood dream and earned a private pilot license. My life’s journey has taught me to never give up, that there is always a way – just don’t quit. I embody The Parent Pilot brand, as founder and pilot, it represents my struggles, my passions, and my perseverance. It allows me to be authentic with parents, teens, and families, I serve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Pre Covide-19, I would go to The High Museum for Jazz, or the Fox Theater if an entertainer were in town. Two of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta are Two Urban licks, and the Capital Grille. For a fun evening place to go, Skyline Park a top Ponce City Market.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Frist and foremost, I want to Shoutout to God, without his grace, I would not have the faith and courage to serve the parent community. Second, my mother and father who set my early foundation of prioritizing God, Family, and Education. My wife Kelly, of 30 years, who has always had faith in me and has supported my dream of owning a business. My three daughters, Erica, Ariana, and Oliva who help me to be present, courageous, and authentic in my pursuit of being the dad I envision myself to be. My friends, DePriest, Ken, Phil, Rick, and Dexter who take my calls anytime to mastermind an idea, or just give me a supportive word of encouragement. Finally, I’d like to thank Skye and Elliot who make the presentation of The Parent Pilot on social media and the website look professional and engaging.
