We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Brittany Woodard-Hampton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Brittany, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
“The Game of Life and How to Play it” by Florence Scovel Shinn has changed my life time and time again. I read this book when I was in high school and I read this book when I was in college a few times. I read this book a few times during my masters program and during my doctoral program. I read it when I first opened the business and I’m rereading it right now. The premise behind this book is that your habitual thoughts create your reality. It reminds me to stay focused on my goals and to not allow outside appearances influence my internal peace. It has inspired me to create a morning routine. I wake up at 4:30 and listen to Michael Beckwith, journal, meditate, visualize, read, study for Acupuncture and then go for a 3 mile walk. I have fallen in love with my morning routine and when I skip a day I feel it both physically and mentally.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Point of Health Wellness Center is a whole-body wellness center where we focus on restoring health to your entire body – physical and emotional. Through the use of acupuncture, Chinese herbs and nutrition, we design a unique program that is tailored for your specific healthcare needs. We treat a wide range of health challenges that stem from both emotional and physical imbalances.
We specialize in treating digestive disorders, chronic pain, menstrual or reproductive disorders, mental and emotional disorders such as anxiety and insomnia, as well as a plethora of other conditions. If you’re looking for help on a mental, emotional or physical level, please give us a call, we would love to help you.
At our Atlanta office, on your initial visit we do four different diagnostic exams to help us understand the root cause of what is going on in your body. Once the root cause is uncovered, we then treat the root cause as well as the symptoms you are experiencing. On your second visit, we utilize an Acugraph, which scans your body and produces a computerized graph identifying how well each of your acupuncture channels are functioning. With the information gathered from the initial visit in addition to the AcuGraph, we provide you with a comprehensive diagnosis and recommend a nutritional protocol. to address the root cause of what’s going on in your body. At The Point of Health, we believe that food is medicine, so nutrition is an intrinsic component of your healing protocol.
In June, we opened our second location in downtown Decatur. This location is predominantly a community acupuncture clinic. Community acupuncture is in a small-group setting and is a good way to try acupuncture if you have never experienced it before. There are several benefits to community acupuncture: not only does it reduce the amount of out-of-pocket expense that you incur for acupuncture but it also enhances the healing property. Community acupuncture is only at our Decatur location. We also offer limited private A
acupuncture sessions at this location.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the outdoors and on any given weekend you can find me and my husband hiking or camping somewhere around the state. When people think about Atlanta or Georgia, they don’t think about how rich the outdoor life is here. So with that being said, the perfect weekend trip/ my favorite things to do in Atlanta and the surrounding area is camping/hiking.
Recently, my husband and I went camping at Lake Allatoona. Lake Allatoona is about 45 minutes north of Atlanta and you feel like you are in a totally different state. It’s the perfect get- away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s peaceful, calm, and serene. You can go camping, hiking, fishing, boating and so much more! To make this the perfect outdoor adventure, I would suggest while on the way to Allatoona stopping by the Treetop zip lining obstacle course, but not before grabbing some Tassili’s Raw Reality for lunch before leaving the city. This obstacle course is completely in the trees. After zip lining and the obstacle course, you would have worked up an appetite and that’s when you pull out the Tassili’s Raw Reality. “The South of the Border Wrap” is my favorite. Then you are ready to continue heading west to Allatoona for camping and hiking.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been so many people who have poured into me in the most amazing ways; however, I would like to highlight five people who have poured into me in a way that has really been life-changing and extremely beneficial. I literally know without a shadow of a doubt I would not be where I am today without these five people.
The first of the five is my husband, Christopher Hampton. He has always embraced the woman that I am. He has loved all of my quirky ways and celebrated and embraced my nerdiness.
During the beginning of the pandemic, we had to close the doors of The Point of Health like so many other small businesses did and, because of loss of revenue, we had to let some of our staff go. My husband decided that he would step into the role of office manager and handle all the back office so I could have more time to dedicate to the patients and not have to wear too many hats. This decision meant he would have to put his career on hold to build me up and make sure that my career got to where I wanted it to be. That was and continues to be such an incredible, selfless act and I love him so much for this. I’m just so thankful for the sacrifice that he made for me and for the business.
The next person that I want to shout out is my sister. Kendra Woodard is my stylist, designer, receptionist, and just all around jack of all trades. She creates a warm, family atmosphere in the office and ensures that our patients are taken care of and the office runs smoothly. She began to work with the business in August 2020 and her presence has been invaluable. She works harder than anyone I know and makes sure that every T is crossed and all the I’s are dotted. I have what I think is the best tribe ever full of people who are always asking me what else do I need? How can I help? I am so thankful for her and her sacrifice and her dedication to the business.
The next person I want to shout out is my best friend, Lloni Soogrim. She is the reason why my business got off the ground when I moved back to Atlanta. Lloni is a business strategist and she outlined every step of opening my business. All the back office things you never think about when starting a business–she made sure I knew about. She also made sure I had all the financial documents I needed. I didn’t know what an EIN was. I didn’t know I needed an NPI. You name it and she walked me through it. In school, I learned how to become an acupuncturist; however, with Lloni, I learned how to become a business owner. Her business strategies help me to streamline my company to make sure that we are not only running smoothly, but also she makes sure that all of my systems work for me and my patients. If you are looking for a business strategist, definitely call her and you will not regret it.
And lastly I’d like to shout out to my parents, Ken and Debra Woodard. My parents have been my biggest cheerleaders from Day One. They enrolled me in every summer science program that Atlanta had to offer. My mom has crossed the country and the world to support me in every last one of my dreams. A few years ago, I wanted to go to India for a medical mission trip. My mom not only helped me come up with the funds to go to India, but she also came along and helped run the front office to make sure that the patients got seen in a timely manner. That just speaks to the type of mother I have. My mother is incredibly phenomenal and her words of encouragement over the years have shaped and molded me into the person I am today.
My parents not only poured into me with words of encouragement, but they have also invested in me and in my education in some pretty incredible ways. I am so lucky to have parents who believe in me and in all of my business ventures. My parents also stepped in during COVID and helped out in The Point of Health, as well. So between my parents, husband, sister and best friend, my business has been able to run smoothly, remain profitable and we even expanded during the pandemic. I am forever grateful for such a strong, supportive tribe that has my back at every turn.
