We had the good fortune of connecting with Domonique Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Domonique, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks means stepping out of your comfort zone to make steps toward where you want to be and where you’re supposed to be. If you avoid taking risks to stay in your comfort zone, you place limits on how far you can go and what you’re able to accomplish. Taking risks is the only reason I’m doing this interview right now. I’m a very reserved person. I love what I do and I love helping people, but I tend to shy away from the spotlight. I could have easily kept “Faith over Logic” as just a motto for myself. However, the push to share it in hopes of inspiring others was greater than my desire to stay in the background. I definitely had concerns at first. What if no one reads the blog? What if no one buys my stuff? There are already so many apparel lines already available. So, was there a risk? Absolutely! But I started the blog, created the apparel line, and launched the store anyway. Now, here we are. Taking the risk and starting my business puts me on a path that pushes me from behind the scenes and straight past the “what ifs”. I now have to be more visible and share more. I have to keep going even when it’s uncomfortable or I’m unsure. But imagine how many more people I’ll reach by stepping out of my comfort zone versus only working within the limits of my comfortability.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business started out as just a way of thinking and life motto for myself. I’m a logical thinker, I need details, I over analyze almost everything. The reality is, some situations won’t make sense. Sometimes you’ll need or want something that seems impossible to obtain. The question is, even when it doesn’t make sense, can you have faith and trust that God is in control and He has your back? I wanted to encourage and inspire other people like me. I started with a hashtag and an occasional, inspirational social media post here and there. Now, “Faith Over Logic” is more than just a thought, motto, or a cool hashtag. It is faith-based apparel, accessories, and a blog that encourages you to remember that your faith in God must be greater than your need for things to make sense. It won’t always make sense…it doesn’t have to. My biggest lesson is “do it anyway”. I never thought I’d be a blogger. I thought maybe enough people were already launching apparel lines. “They’ve got it covered, I’ll just support” is what I thought. However, I realized that I have my own message to share and a purpose to fulfill. If it’s what you’re meant to do, take the risk and do it. It will work out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, we’d probably spend most of our time in the Charlotte, NC area. I fell in love with Salsarita’s in college so we’d definitely have that for lunch one day. It’s nothing grand but I go as often as I can. Rooftop dinner at Firebird’s. We’d take a trip to Camp North End and spend some time checking out the scenery and artwork. We’d also check out the shops and maybe go to one of the restaurants there. We’ll check out some live music at The Living Room. Next, we’d spend some time in Huntersville at Spare Time Entertainment where we’d bowl, maybe play laser tag, and try the escape room. I also know a couple of season ticket holders for the Carolina Panthers. So if it’s football season, we can end the week by going to a game.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am without God and the support and encouragement of my family and friends. Special shoutout to my biggest cheerleaders: my parents, my brother, and my best friend. They are usually the first to hear most of my ideas and they push and inspire me in more ways than they’ll ever know!
