We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree Swinney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desiree, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind BeautybyPoca initially was solely about nails because I was attending school to be a licensed nail technician, but then I discovered I was pregnant and wanted to take a different approach to the beauty industry. I’ve always been fascinated by everything beauty related from hair, makeup, nails, you name it! Not to mention, I’ve always had aspirations of being my own boss and I am doing just that while also being a full time mother.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The one thing I’m most proud of about my business was that I was able to launch my business right after becoming a mother, but not only that it was also during a national pandemic; which was during a time a lot of small businesses were going under. I am where I am today business-wise due to persistence, dedication, and support. It was not easy by any means launching my business, a lot had to do with proper finances, and everything else from a logistics standpoint. I overcame those challenges by budgeting the funds I did have, starting small and then expanding my business from there. The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way has been take your time, everything will happen when it’s suppose to and how it’s suppose to. I want the world to know that BeautybyPoca is an inclusive brand that is made for any and all individuals; we have even expanded to a men’s line in the past few months as well. What I want the world to know about me is that I came from a background where I didn’t have much, no handouts or anything else, so my success is being built from the ground up. When it comes to BeautybyPoca my goal is to offer quality and affordability, and the luxury feel without the luxury price tag.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting for a week long trip I would take them to the city of Atlanta, and I do mean the city city, it’s so much action that goes on in the city. Downtown is Skyview Atlanta which features a beautiful ferris wheel that sees over the city of Atlanta. I would take them to the new eateries, such as Slutty Vegan , which is one of my favorites because I’m a vegetarian, but also a place that even meatlovers love. I would even take them to the Atlanta Beltline or even The Botanical Garden, which are both a great sceneries for pictures just to name a few things. I’m an adventurer, so of course I’ve been to many other places but these are definitely some of my top places I’ve been in the city. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate a shoutout to first and foremost God, because without him I am nothing. Then, I would like to dedicate a shoutout to my amazing fiancé, friends, family, and customers because without any of them there would not be a BeautyByPoca business to call my own.
