We had the good fortune of connecting with Cooper Fortune and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cooper, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During Covid, I took a free Marc Jacobs drawing tutorial through Instagram. After I had finished creating, I posted a photo online. Immediately I had a message from a follower asking to purchase the drawing. I had never taken sketching seriously until I realized people were interested in what I could create. People began to message me asking if I could paint their wedding gowns, a photo of them in their favorite outfit, or their favorite runway look.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sketchy Betch was founded at the beginning of Covid lockdown by Cooper Fortune. As a recent college graduate, Cooper was unsure where to take her apparel merchandising degree. She owes her success to the Marc Jacobs drawing tutorials that were presented during lockdown. Looking for a new way to occupy her time, she started participating in these tutorials and realized she had a talent for illustrating clothes.
After many inquiries through Instagram to purchase her “Betches”, Cooper eventually launched her website to the public. Sketchy Betch illustrations are based on real couture pieces that Cooper sees on virtual runways. Every so often, she designs an original outfit or gown to be worn on her Betch.
Cooper’s work is largely influenced by the 60’s and femininity. Each work is about color, sequins, and glamour. The Betches presented are meant to reflect the ultra-femininity of the fashion industry. The medium most often used includes acrylic paint, ink, and watercolor.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am currently loving the Sandy Springs dining scene! Some of my favorite places to grab a cocktail include The Select and Nam Kitchen. I also love to support local businesses; Chapmans Cafe is my go-to for lunch. When I can find a moment to shop, I always stop by The Blake women’s boutique.
I am currently loving Pure Barre and have recently started teaching at the Chastain and Buckhead studio.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to credit Jessica Durrant, a fellow fashion illustrator and mentor. Jessica helped me grow in not only my creative process, but also taught me how to create a business that aligned with my brand and who I am as an artistic individual. @jessillustrator on Instagram
