We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlean McWright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlean, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I listen to my heart in order to know when to keep going. Personally, I do not believe in “give up”. Instead, I believe that a person should be redirected. For example, if it is not working then choose a better path, but do not give up. Giving up is not an option.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professionally, I am a videographer, photographer, and editor. I am the owner of a small business, KapShaun/caption/ . KapShaun, started in August 2017 with a goal to capture the true essence of its subject through the lens. Of course, people want to channel their alter ego when they arrive on set. There is nothing wrong with doing so, but we encourage them to be who they are on a daily. We understand that who a person is on camera can differ from who they are in person. Therefore, we take pride in capturing authenticity. I believe we stand out from others because we work from the heart. If we believe it is not, we will halt the session. This method always allow us to capture our subjects at their best. We are not interested in what social media want to see of you. We want to show social media why your daily self is more than enough. I am most proud of my faith in my business. I alway tell people, “If you don’t believe, no one else will,” There are moments in which I get exhausted. Sometimes, I want to give up everything. Often, I fear new challenges because I am uncertain the outcome. Each emotion is overshadowed by my heart. My heart does not submit to fear. I share this in hopes that others understand that the road will get bumpy. You might not have a lot of supporters along the journey. It is not for you to force them to believe in you. All you have to do is believe in your calling. Trust me, everyone will follow sooner than later.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A favorite location of mine would be the “Clayton County International Park”. It has a great 5mile trail. Currently, they are enhancing the park but it does not stop me from getting up and enjoying a nice morning walk. I think it is a great alternative to Stone Mountain. It is reserved, with a smaller crowd and very peaceful. When it comes to food, I eat any and everywhere because I love change. If I had to choose, a personal favorite of mine would be “Copeland’s of New Orleans”. It has authentic gumbo. It is very eloquent and the dinner is superb. During the summer, I love to spend my day life at “Little Five Points” and nightlife on “Edgewood”. The energies differ but each are great for grabbing something to eat and mixing and mingling with others. If you would like to enjoy bowling and games in a crowd of adults the “Painted Duck” would be perfect! The last option I will share is for the adults that enjoy lounges. It is called “Sivas”. They have a minimum fee on Saturdays, but it is worthwhile. The other options I mentioned are “FREE!”. Alternatives to the nightlife scene is Peter Street and Buckhead strip. If you are looking for more family friendly spots then Legoland, SkyZone, Atlantic Station (Movie in the Park in summer & IceSkating in winter), the Center for Puppetry Arts, and more are available.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my business partner, Jasmine McWright. When KapShaun first opened, she was 6 months pregnant. Simultaneously, she handled the paperwork, phone calls, and scheduling while caring for her (2) children. Her loyalty and faith remained even during the times in which the pay was little to none. The moments in which I doubted proceeding, she continuously believed in the business. She even mastered skills in videography and photography to be able to assist on set. A lot of times I am acknowledged as the face of KapShaun, but Jasmine is the reason the business runs smoothly and stay afloat. I am forever grateful for her. So, I dedicate this Shoutout to Jasmine S. McWright.
