We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla the Poet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla the Poet, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because it’s all I’ve ever known. Growing up I was a very artistic child with no boundaries & I wanted to fully explore that as an adult. It has also became my main form of expression & release, like therapy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started making music off apps on my phone & originally just produced music. My beats were so different & experimental that not many people wanted to rap over them, so I did. At the age of 19 I began taking producing & rapping seriously. With just a mic & a laptop in my closet, I also started learning how to engineer & I’ve been putting in my hours ever since. Being a musical artist is not the easiest thing in the world, of course it has its challenges. Most of my challenges were mental, revolving around numbers & views. I’ve learned, and still learning, to overcome these challenges through leaving out comparisons & really appreciating my work for what it is. I know that no one will ever be able to re-create what I do the way that I do it, & that in its self makes me feel rare & special. My music is a bit experimental with every single & project I put out. I tend to love trying new sounds pretty often & that might be what sets me apart from others. With every project/song there’s a new sound to look forward to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to the beach first, I’m an early bird so we’d catch the sunrise on the beach. Then we’d take a trip to Downtown Savannah & hang out on River Street. After I’d take them to my favorite vegan restaurant downtown, then we’d call it a day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
S/o to ReignCloud Music Group for taking me in as family, my mom for being my biggest supporter & investor, & my close friends that motivate me to keep going when I need the extra push.
