We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Covid! Covid made me do it. But on a serious note, being furloughed unexpectedly from my job pushed me to find another way to bring in income. I had been doing hair on the side for as long as I can remember (as far back as 10yrs old) but now was the time to see what I was really capable of. It initially started as just a way to make money while I was home and then turned into me being booked almost every other day for the entire month! At that point I knew I had to invest a little more into myself to see where this would take me. So, I created my business name, Brooke The Braid Babe, took to Instagram to promote myself, and with the support of my friends and family, I’ve been actively building my clientele.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Honestly, I never thought I would have my own business because that wasn’t my focus. It crossed my mind before and it’s something I knew I wanted but I was working full time and that was all I had to time for, or so I thought. This pandemic has fortunately been a blessing in disguise for me. It allowed me the time to perfect my craft and build. I absolutely love doing hair and making people feel beautiful! It’s such a joy when my clients see their hair and their face lights up. I take complete pride in my craft and do every single head with love. It’s only been a few months so it’s been a steady building process thus far. I am so grateful to have the friends that I do because they are all business owners and their support and knowledge is so important and beneficial. They give wonderful advice and motivation that keeps me going. As for my clients, they are truly the best part of it all. I thoroughly enjoy their reaction at the end of their service, the kind words, referrals and most grateful when they return! Even getting to this point has been a great learning experience. I did not realize how much goes into promoting and marketing your business via social media. From algorithms to proper hashtags to cool and fun content, it’s all been a great journey so far. I appreciate all the feedback that I receive because that is what makes me better every day. I want the world to know that I my love for hair speaks through my hands and I am so grateful for this opportunity to showcase to the world my craft, my art. God has truly blessed me and I want to be able to spread the love and positivity to others as I make them feel beautiful!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lucky for me, I live in a city that most people love to visit and there is much to do! To be honest there is so much I still haven’t done that I like to play tourist too! We have to start out with food. Brunch is always amazing with Mimosas so we would hit up The Hive Buckhead for a great vibe and hookah. For a cool lunch with some Margaritas, I’d take them to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, San Pedro in Atlanta and sit outside and enjoy the city scenery. For dinner, we can swing over to Rock Steady where the lamb and lighting is amazing! With a week to enjoy, there are a few favs that I would like them to experience. I love nature and there is a gorgeous Canyon about 2 hours south called Providence Canyon that we’d hike. Check out the art at the High museum then head over to The Trap Museum to see a little Atlanta culture. A friend of mine just told me about glassblowing so we would definitely have to try that! I feel like most people come to Atlanta for the night life. I’ve have honestly become a homebody the older I get but I still love to get out and have fun. I would take my friend out for some drinks, hookah, good music and great vibes at a nice lounge in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would absolutely love to shoutout a few people that have truly motivated and inspired me throughout this entire process. I’d first like to shoutout my Wife, thank you so much for supporting and believing in any and everything I want to do! My best friend Elena, for introducing me to do this interview, linking me with people who have helped me grow my business and for being so uplifting and encouraging at all times. My BFF Quisera who is also a business owner. Shoutout to you for always being down and always being encouraging! Shoutout to my other besties Danah and Nessa, my entire support system, anyone who shares my post/stories, anyone who sits in my chair, and most all, Shoutout to God!
