We had the good fortune of connecting with AP Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi AP, what principle do you value most?
Integrity is a principle that matters to me a lot. As a business owner, my goal is to operate in such a way that my customer and potential customer can trust me. Whether it’s my beauty business or my blogging business; any collaboration I involve myself with needs to align with my mission, my values and morals. I want everything that I do to reflect who I am as a person. We live an in era of things appearing to be other than what they are, specifically when it comes to social media. I never want anyone to visit any platform of mine and feel duped by who I present myself to be. I do my best to uphold my integrity even when that decision is unpopular. However, I have to be at peace with me at the end of the day; so integrity will always be of utmost importance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think the thing I am most proud of out of the work that I do is patient advocacy. I endured a lot in the health care system throughout my life; medical trauma is real! However, I have been able to use my experiences to better advocate for myself and to help others learn the power in advocating for their health care needs. I have had the pleasure most recently of contributing my story and insights to 3 different organizations by way of speaking engagements as well as being featured in a video for Hashtag Our Stories where I was able to shed light on late diagnosis and what life is like living with a chronic illness.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m an absolute nerd and cornball so my first stop would be the Georgia Aquarium. That is literally my favorite place in Atlanta! I would definitely take the Sky View Ferris Wheel ride, visit the Coca-Cola Museum, hit up Bugaloos for a swing and some drinks. My favorite restaurant is definitely Two Urban licks, their salmon chips are my addiction. Other than that, I gotta be honest in saying I am a homebody so I don’t know that I can offer up much more advice on what to checkout. You can give me a book, a nice dry red wine and a foot massage and that’s the best fun for me. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband J. Young who has been incredibly supportive in all that I strive to do every step of the way; and loves me despite the deeply flawed person that I am. I also would like to thank designer Ashontay Hubbard owner of Atlanta based fashion brand Christian Omeshun who recently included me in her recent collection launch Nu Boheme. While many brands shy away from putting a visibly extended size person in their campaigns; she put me front and center. I appreciate the opportunity. I would also like to show the same appreciation to Elle Dove owner of Lorenza James by Elle Dove who was the first brand to feature me in her Energy Collection in 2018. If she hadn’t done that I don’t know that I would have thought that opportunities like these could be possible.
