We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber McLure Hutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what are you inspired by?
As a woman artist, business owner and new mother, I am truly inspired by other women who run businesses. Especially women with young children who are managing both. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends that are entrepreneur’s, who have taken the leap into self employment and continue to work towards their personal career goals doing what they love. As I started my business “New Finn Art” this last year selling my paintings, I have become more aware and inspired by all the strong women that are putting themselves out there everyday to grow their businesses and fulfill their passions. Through social media and online platforms, I have been able to connect with other like minded artists. It has been enlightening to see their work and how they express it to the world. The quote “Empowered Women, Empower Women” has never resonated more to me and I feel proud and inspired to continue to share my art work and hopefully inspire and empower others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I paint watercolour and acrylic paintings that draw inspiration from the Island of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada where I live in St. John’s. Newfoundland is a provincial Island on the east coast surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. I am very proud to live on this beautiful island that is full of Irish and Scottish Heritage, natural rugged beauty, rockface ocean cliffs, and a culture that is distinctively Newfoundland. The best way I can describe Newfoundland to someone who has never been, is to picture Ireland from the landscape and the people and then add the unique Newfoundland charm. I am a self taught artist and have enjoyed painting and creating my whole life. But It was not until the pandemic began and my busy life was put on hold and that I started to really invest in painting again. In the beginning it was the interest of friends and family that ignited my new found career in the art world. I am so grateful to those people that began purchasing my art and helped give me the lift I needed to start sharing my art online and out for the world. I immediately received such a positive response and have been busy growing my business “New Finn Art” ever since. Navigating how to build my first business has had its challenges but It would be untruthful if I did not say that my greatest challenge has been balancing being a new mom and a business owner. Yet caring for my now 7 month old son and continuing to paint has been indescribably rewarding. I am constantly learning new ways to expand and continue doing something that I am passionate about. The real beauty in my new endeavor has been creating a platform and business for myself that is doing something I truly love to do ! I hope when viewing my art it gives you a sense of calm and tranquility, like the island of Newfoundland has given me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re lucky enough to one day visit the provincial Island of Newfoundland, it will forever hold a place in your heart . The international airport is located in the city of St. John’s. After your arrival, your first adventure will be your cab ride to your stay. Many a times, a colourful character will entertain you with stories and advice on your arrival in an accent you will wish you had subtitles to understand. “Yes b’y my ducky, if you stays where your at, I’ll come where your to ” is one of the many Newfoundland slang you will come to hear and hopefully understand during your visit. The must see and do’s in Newfoundland are firstly getting screeched in on George Street at Christians Pub! An old traditional ceremony to swear you in as an honorary Newfoundlander that will find yourself kissing the mouth of a cod fish by the end of it! Then you can head off for a hike on the East Coast Trail. The breathtaking views and well maintained trails along the Atlantic ocean will leave you in awe at the endless untouched coastal terrain. Keep your eyes open for whales and iceberg sightings or a cute puffin flying by. The city of St John’s and towns out around the Bay are noticeable for their historic saltbox homes that are painted vibrant colours. A visit to Quidi Vidi Village only 5 minutes from the city will leave you feeling worlds away and as if you walked back into a simpler time. A time where you can drink a beer made from iceberg water or jump on a boat with a local for a like no other cod jigging fishing experience. From there you can enjoy a boil up on the wharf and devour your fresh caught cod. And you can’t forget to pair it with fries, dressing and gravy, one of the many unique dishes of Newfoundland. Alongside Jiggs dinner, toutons, moose stew and the endless fresh mussels and seafood that you must try . It is best to end your evening with some traditional live Newfoundland music at Kelly’s Pub or one of the other countless local pubs pulling you in with traditional ballads . The musical talent on this island is incredible with the long lines of Irish music in their blood. There really is so much for you to do that this itinerary is just the tip of the iceberg ! Pun 100% intended! You could truly spend a month or more travelling the island, meeting the kindest people and seeing all the wonders Newfoundland has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family above all deserves a dedication in my Shoutout! First to my Mom Lahja, as she gave me a love for art and painting since I was a little girl. With her constant support, she has always encouraged my creative side and fuelled my artistic talents. I want to credit my twin sister Jessie McLure, who is an entrepreneur and business owner. Watching her success over the years, has given me a path to follow in starting a new business. Her strong confidence in herself and the work that she does has given me the courage to take a risk and begin my career in the art world. I also want to give a shoutout to my husband Nick, for being encouraging and helping ensure that I have enough free time with our busy young family so I can paint and continue creating a business I am so proud of!
