We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyki Senoj and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyki, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s the role of my body. I’m a creation in live form, embodying many layers and components that help me carry out this experience that has been created by like minded beings.
I believe art is the true form of communication and that’s how we give people power to express themselves.
I pursued being a creative personally because I see it no other way, how can I express myself in a box?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to let my energy influence my environment, not the other way around. When I’m filming a video or taking photographs for a shoot, I’m using outside materials or naturalistic techniques. I’m very serious about detail and that everything with substance should have intent. Then there’s this anomaly, like a disruption in the process and I see my mistakes, my flaws and my imperfections, and I’m at awe of it. Just when I was taught to color within the lines, I find myself coloring out of it. I contribute that to my art for the fact that it’s still work in progress and It’s a mirror effect of my life.
I always thought this way since I was 10. By that time, all of my creative outlets were disrupted due to familial conflict and migration. I would fuel those inconveniences into my drive for creating, and let myself be vulnerable to share it with my peers.
The biggest challenge was shifting my mindset to believing it was obtainable. I had a lot of people around me asking, “is it worth going through” “how are you able without funding”, people that I once valued their opinion.
I would simply tell them that it would work itself out and that my vision was so clear, I had to see it through by any means. Even if I had 2nd thoughts on myself, I would still be anticipating my outcome. I just intuitively knew that it would happen the way I foreseen it and those people could not understand how.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestfriend were to visit me in the city, I’d take them to Ponce City Market first, the area is popping all times of the day, so there’s no dull moment in finding fun or food.
Nightlife would be the underground scene. I like going to private events and special parties, go to be in the know to know, type of thing. Something about the seclusion makes me feel important.
I like doing things that stimulate my mind, so anything working with my hands. Like pottery, sip and paints or interactive galleries/museums is my go to when you just wanna be outside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to Dot Jayei for always believing in my creative expenditures and pushing me to my limit. Best tattoo artist if you’re looking for one in Charlotte as well.
