We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Roman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by people who face tough challenges but still keep pushing forward. Their determination and ability to stay focused, no matter what obstacles come their way, motivate me to keep going and work hard in everything I do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work centers around being an athlete and a student of chiropractic care, and I’m passionate about both. What sets me apart is my commitment to adaptive sports and wellness, especially given the challenges I’ve faced with cerebral palsy, hemiparesis, and spina bifida occulta. I’m most proud of how I’ve turned these challenges into strengths, both on the court and in my studies.
Getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy. There have been plenty of obstacles, from physical limitations to balancing academics and sports. But I’ve learned that persistence is key. I’ve had to adapt, learn, and push through setbacks, but each challenge has made me stronger and more determined.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of community and support. I wouldn’t be where I am without the encouragement of my family, friends, coaches, and teammates. They’ve been there through the highs and lows, reminding me that I’m capable of more than I sometimes realize.
What I want the world to know about me is that my story is one of resilience. I believe that no matter what life throws at you, with the right mindset and support, you can achieve your goals. My journey is about breaking down barriers, not just for myself, but for others who might face similar challenges.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Atlanta for a week, here’s how I’d plan the ultimate trip:
Day 1: Downtown Atlanta Exploration
We’d kick things off by exploring downtown. We’d visit the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, and then head over to the World of Coca-Cola to dive into some pop culture history. For lunch, we’d go to The Varsity, an Atlanta classic known for its hot dogs and burgers. In the afternoon, we’d take a stroll through Centennial Olympic Park, and if we’re up for it, visit the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Dinner would be at Mary Mac’s Tea Room, an iconic spot for some delicious Southern comfort food.
Day 2: Midtown and Piedmont Park
We’d spend the day in Midtown, starting with breakfast at The Flying Biscuit Café. Then, we’d explore Piedmont Park, which is perfect for a relaxing walk or renting bikes. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is right next door, and it’s a must-see with its beautiful displays. For lunch, we’d grab something fresh at The Vortex, a famous burger spot in Little Five Points. We’d end the day with a visit to the High Museum of Art, followed by dinner at South City Kitchen, where we can enjoy some upscale Southern cuisine.
Day 3: Day Trip to Stone Mountain
We’d venture out for a day trip to Stone Mountain Park. We could hike up the mountain for some great views or take the Skyride to the top. There’s plenty to do in the park, from mini-golf to exploring the nature trails. We’d bring a picnic or grab something at the park. After a day of adventure, we’d return to Atlanta for dinner at Rathbun’s, known for its creative American cuisine.
Day 4: Historic Atlanta
We’d dive into some of Atlanta’s rich history, starting with a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. We’d tour his childhood home, the Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the King Center. For lunch, we’d head to Busy Bee Café, a soul food institution in the city. In the afternoon, we’d visit the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead, where we could explore the historic Swan House and the Civil War exhibits. Dinner would be at The Optimist, a seafood restaurant with a great atmosphere.
Day 5: Relaxation and Shopping
We’d take it easy with a relaxing day in Buckhead. We’d start with a leisurely breakfast at Café Intermezzo, a European-style café with great pastries and coffee. Then, we’d hit up Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza for some shopping. In the afternoon, we could visit the Atlanta BeltLine, a former railway corridor that’s now a multi-use trail, perfect for walking or biking. We’d grab dinner at Eclipse di Luna, a tapas bar with live music and a fun vibe.
Day 6: Arts and Entertainment
We’d spend the day enjoying Atlanta’s arts and entertainment scene. We’d start with a visit to the Fox Theatre, even if it’s just for a tour of this historic venue. For lunch, we’d go to Ecco, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in Midtown. In the afternoon, we could catch a film at the Plaza Theatre, an iconic indie movie theater. For dinner, we’d head to Gunshow, where the chef-driven small plates create an interactive dining experience.
Day 7: Outdoor Adventure and Farewell
For the last day, we’d go for a hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park, just outside the city. It’s a great spot for some outdoor adventure and has beautiful views, especially around the old mill ruins. After the hike, we’d return to the city for lunch at Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, known for some of the best barbecue in Atlanta. We’d spend the afternoon relaxing at a local brewery, like Monday Night Brewing, before heading out for a final dinner at Aria, a Buckhead restaurant known for its elegant dishes and warm ambiance.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. They’ve been my biggest supporters from day one, always encouraging me to chase my goals and never give up. Their love and belief in me have played a huge role in where I am today. I also want to recognize the coaches and teammates I’ve had along the way. They’ve pushed me to be my best and taught me the value of hard work and perseverance.
