We had the good fortune of connecting with Akiko Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akiko, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
‘Akiko Denise Wellness’ came by way of wanting to make space for women of culture, young and old, to re-/connect to themselves, make time for stillness, and unwind. This journey first began, officially, in 2018 when I started my instructor certification in yoga + meditation practice through Sacred Chill West. Through holding yoga and meditation classes, women’s circles, and tea ceremonies, I began to realize more and more how difficult it can be for us to unwind in the midst of the ‘hustle and bustle’ of work, life in the city, motherhood, and so on.

Emerge Wellness Tea Company came about in 2019 when I decided to share my own personal practice with sipping tea and holding small tea ‘ceremonies’ for myself with the rest of the world. Something as small as pouring a cup of tea can become a meditative practice for us when done with intention, slowness, and quiet––I think this feeling is something I’m always trying to instill in my work… Just creating avenues + channels for women to give themselves the permission to take a gentle pause + enjoy themselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Take time to be in stillness. Mindfully. Sip. Slowly. Selfishly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off I would head to Sweetwater Creek walk the trails, find a river rock and do a simple meditation. Pack some hot tea and snacks from the house. Later, I’d head to the westside belt line grab some fresh juice from Juiced Up and roller skate or ride bikes down the belt line. Swing by Tassili’s Vegan Café and get a huge kale wrap and some spicy popcorn. Find couple of markets and support the local.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Through my endeavors, I have met so many phenomenal, creative women! There’s a few I’ve had the joy of working with – Mara Anthony (@mararosaria) + her sound healing sessions; sokari (@courageousspaceyoga) founder of Courageous Space Yoga/Wellness; and of course Octavia Raheem (@octaviaraheem), my teacher.

As far as spaces go, I have to shoutout the HERmarket and their wonderful events! As well as Emerge’s newest home, The Reverie in SW Atlanta, a collective of work spaces + shops for women creators/artists.
