We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriene “Kizzy” Brewster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adriene “Kizzy”, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind my nonprofit organization is simple yet meaningful. I grew up being bullied, rejected, feeling left out and not good enough. These emotions played a vital role on my self esteem & confidence which led me to date the wrong men which also stemmed from being raped and molested. Over the years I carried this emotional and mental weight and it almost destroyed me until I started to talk about it through IPOP INC. “I’m Pretty On Purpose”.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My awakening came when I went to jail for a man who I allowed to talk me into bringing something inside the jail to him. I was facing 7 years prison time. I cried and prayed. When I went to court they showed me mercy and gave me 5 years probation. At that moment I knew God had a serious plan for my life. I’ve been homeless, slept in my car, single and teen mom as well as an entrepreneur. I went back to school to get my GED, graduated from cosmetology school and owned salons, sold hair weave and jewelry. None of that satisfied me still. I felt like I was missing something. I went to a medical program and received my CNA certificate yet I still felt like I was t fulfilling my purpose. And finally I told God; “ I will obey”. And here I am the founder of IPOP INC ; a nonprofit organization that creates a safe place for women who struggle mentally and who have been raped / molested.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow! This would be a very fun week for us! We would definitely go to Silver Skillet for breakfast off of 14th street in Atlanta! Their food is fresh and fast. It’s an old school historical restaurant with a family vibe! Also, Breakfast at Barney’s. It’s more upscale but the food was is delicious. For dinner we would have to go to Fogo De Chao! A Brazilian steakhouse. The selfie museum! Because what girl doesn’t love a good selfie! The aquarium just to have some laid back girl time! And of course cook and chill at home!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost; GOD! Without God none of this would be possible! Secondly, my mama. She passed away last year to covid 19. She was a trooper, she never gave up or in. Through many hardships, homeless times and even prison time; she came home and bounced back like the queen she was. I get my strength from her. Last but not least; MY SON! He never looked down on, never judged me and ALWAYS supported me and has my back! (Daviear Brewster)
