We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlie Gibbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlie, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I would get asked all the time, “Ash, I wanna write a book, but I don’t know how or I need help.” I usually tell people the key to writing is to start writing. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. I think many believe there is a strategy to writing and publishing a book or writing a script. I think the hardest step is to just.start,writing. Let the creativity flow, and remove any and all limitations. You have to get out of your own way, and I find that is when some of the best stories are told.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a published author writing in the mystery spy thriller genre. It is challenging because my genre is dominated mainly by men. So allowing my writing style to stand out is how I push forward. I have been called the “Queen of plot twist” because I love plot twists in all my stories. I want the audience to think they have figured it out but NOPE, it was this other person the entire time! #iRemember Book Series is my baby, but I have written over 28 stories/books. I always battled with dyslexia in writing and reading, so it is very challenging for me when I review my work. Special thank you to Farrah Johnson, who is my editor! I love her, she understands my writing style and challenges me. Surrounding myself with people who believe in my vision as much as I do has encouraged me to overcome my weaknesses and take on new opportunities. Because of that…I have won awards, acknowledgments, and much more.
I write stories inspired by the world around me, the people I meet, and some of my own experiences. I don’t know any other way to write. Yes, it’s fiction but inspiration has to come from somewhere. I have a motto, “As long as there is a story to tell, there is a book to write.” Now I have taken on screenwriting, which is a new game for me. But so far it has been a rewarding one. Writing a story and watching professional actors share it visually on screen…there’s nothing like it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I usually spend time in downtown Atlanta during football season. I’m an NFL podcast host (Not Your Average Cheerleader) so I would start there…Mercedes Benz stadium for a football game! The food, the people, the energy…there’s nothing like it! I enjoy The Battery with all the different restaurant spots and shops…it gives a community feel during baseball and football season! I love the energy there too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate this shout-out to my faith in God, family, and close friends. My mother, father, sister, brother, and nephew always, and I mean have always, supported me. One of my favorite moments was sharing my short film with my mom and dad the night the editing was completed post-production. I had tears in my eyes listening to my dad recall parts of the books. My sister buys every book, t-shirt, bag…all of it. My best friend Crystal, my extended family, and close friends. You all are amazing and always are front row and center whenever I embark on a project! I love you all so much. To the amazing people I have worked with, from director Joseph Walters and many more! You all are so talented, and I could not have created something so unique for the film without your help and support. Thank you, everyone.
If you don’t see your name, know I mean you too! Thank You!
