We had the good fortune of connecting with Geechi Pettus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Geechi, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Believing in myself and giving myself the time to stick to one particular clothing project . I’ve always been a guy who would dibble and dabble in all the arts . And even with fashion i always went from one project to the next . So deciding to stick to one clothing project and giving it it’s time to grow and become what it has now is prob the single most important decision .
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most excited for the world to see my work like to See my thought process fleshed out in physical form that’s so important . I got where i am today by honestly just staying the course . I’ve been making clothes since i was 16 and I’m 26 now so it’s really just been me putting my 10,000 hours in essentially . It was not easy but anything you really want in life will not be easy so I’m here for the journey . I’m still not even where i want to be but I’m a lot closer than i was yesterday . As cliche as it sounds I’ve learned to expect the unexpected and be open to possible inspiration from everywhere . I want people to know that I’m just a product of when you put the necessary steps in to turn your ideas to physical form .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely eat at this black owned restaurant we have here called eon , amazing food so I’d have to go there , Also grandma B’s man there’s too many to name but we’d def eat really good . Drinking and hanging out would be at my current favorite spot which is 808 i love it there . We’d go past the shop and i would have some 1 of 1 Safe Haven(the name of my clothing brand) pieces made for him . Just give him a little inside peek on what my life consist of now cause he hasn’t got a chance to see yet . The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My graphic designer tutu he knows how much i appreciate him . My business partner marlon he needs his flowers too . S/O to all my klub brothers and S/O to literally everyone that’s bought a piece of clothing or even showed appreciation to the art . I love you all
