We had the good fortune of connecting with Amoy Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amoy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I believe that my path into this creative career was predetermined. I am firmly convinced that I have been called to pursue the vocation of a writer. Unlike any other pursuit in my life, writing flows effortlessly from me. As they say, one’s purpose is a fusion of innate talents and what brings joy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art are my words compiled into books and blogs. I write in a way that connects with my audience in a real way. I’m not about showcasing a diverse vocabulary. I lean more into ensuring that my words are resonating with my readers and that they walk away feeling more confident with the knowledge they have gained. I’m most proud of who I have developed into as a woman and who I am growing into as a mom. Getting to where I am now took a lot of risk and blind faith. It wasn’t easy but I trusted the process. My challenges were always rooted in self-confidence. There was always the question of if I believed I could become who I wanted to be. That in itself took a lot of self talk and introspection. One lesson I’d leave with young women who resonate with my story is to drown out the outside noise and connect with who you are on a deeper level. Many can tell us who we should be but it is who we want to be that truly matters. We should pursue that against all odds.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not from Atlanta but if we’re in Portmore, Jamaica, my day would start with breakfast at First Bite then a long drive to portland to soak up some sun and white sand beaches (Boston Beach or Frenchman’s Cove). I would also overnight in Portland at Sea Cliff Hotel and stop for lunch at one of my favourite spots in Kingston on the way back.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This may be unconventional but I would not be where I am today without my mother – Barbara – and my unwavering faith in God. My mother has sacrificed so much to ensure that my path on earth is meaningful. I also credit her for the introduction of my faith and my strong sense of self. Without her prayerful pursuit, shoutout Atlanta may have never encountered Amoy Lawrence.
