We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, what do you attribute your success to?
The important factor behind my success as an talent in the entertainment industry is being resilient. I embarked on my entertainment journey as a teenager which has been one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. I never knew a print ad could open doors for other opportunities. Although, I have been fortunate for my projects the industry can be overwhelming at times. Therefore, being able to continue the drive, passion, and love I have for my career is being surrounded by genuine support. In addition, to having support it is also believing in myself knowing the best is yet to come.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It is amazing how representation in entertainment can influence someone to go after their dreams with hard work and guidance. Prior, to embarking on an entertainment career my goal was to become a lawyer and than a judge like Greg Mathias. The struggles he encountered in his life but was able to turn it around inspired me to know it is not where you start in life but how you finish. Although, I am no longer pursing an legal career, I am able to use the same mindset to go after my dreams with the right goals and plans set ahead.

My first entertainment job was a print ad known as K2 Zombie discussing the affects of using synthetic marijuana that was displayed in New York City Times Square, District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia buses. I was able to use the print ad to open the doors for acting. I was unaware that while you are working on a project you have to keep the momentum going because no one is in control of your career but you.

I have been fortunate to build a resume in entertainment with some meaningful projects I am proud of. The road to building my career has not been easy. The entertainment industry is very political and no matter how talented you may be at times you can feel like you are not good enough because of something. It was important for me to gravitate to seasoned professionals in the business to guide me on the trajectory to have a longevity career in a positive way.

The overall takeaway I want people to know about me is I am know different than you. If you can visualize it, you can achieve it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best thing living in the Washington, D.C. is all the access I have to do things and never get bored. If one of my bestfriends came to visit me. of course, we would do the African American Museum because I have heard great things about it. I know the history we both would learn will be breathtaking that one day is not enough time. The benefit is whatever we may not have seen that day we can always come back. Afterwards, go to a rooftop for good food and drinks, and go axe throwing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” is one of my favorite quotes that resonates with me knowing that life is a journey and the interactions with the people I have met contributed in one way or another. I have received much support from my family, friends, and educators that all play a role in my life from affirmations, a listening ear, investing in my dreams even when I do not believe in them, and providing me with guidance to keep prevailing forward.
