We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Simeon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea of BlackGayComicGeek simply from not seeing the representation I wanted for myself. Most reviewers I saw were straight white men, but then when you did have the prominent Black reviewers and reviewers of color they too were heterosexual, so there were certain nuances in reviews that would go unspoken of, shows that I cared about that I didn’t see people talking about, etc. So as the saying goes “If you want something done, you gotta do it yourself.” I am also a firm believer that representation matters and representation equals normalization.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Honestly it’s a simple answer. What sets me apart from others is all in the name BlackGayComicGeek.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well my best friend and I graduated with theatre degrees, so with living in NYC we’d definitely see something on Broadway. Love the theatre.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a lot of people that helped me get to the point of creating BlackGayComicGeek, like my best friend Jessica who encouraged me to make content for years before I started doing it, my parents who supported anything I said I wanted to do, my other two friends who would uplift me anytime I doubted myself.
