Meet Michael Carter | Filmmaker, actor, singer, business owner and entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I made the decision to pursue this creative path because I wanted to honor my mother’s commitment of exposing me to the creative arts when I was young. When I was a child, my mother kept me actively involved in choir and stage plays. She encouraged me to do my best. Although my mother passed away on March 14, 2022, her spirit will be with me always. She played a major role in honing my creative skills and my desire to perform. My father was also there when I needed him. The love that he shared made me stronger so that I could deal with adversity. Now that I am retired, I am able to draw upon those memories and values instilled within me by my parents and do something that I love. When I retired in 2017, I was cast in my friend’s movie. I realized that I loved the creative process of filmmaking. So, I tried my hand at writing. I wrote, directed and produced What Goes Around Comes Around. My life has been forever changed and I am forever grateful for this new chapter in my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before I can talk about my new creative path, I must share with everyone my previous journey that prepared me for this new opportunity. I enlisted in The United States Army in 1995. I was 20 years old. I was undisciplined and quick-tempered. I am comfortable admitting that I was afraid when I first joined the military because I did not know what to expect. There are not enough words to express my gratitude for the life lessons that I learned during my career with the military. The military has given me the discipline and tenacity needed to possess a strong work ethic. I strive to be the best in everything I do. I work hard because it helps me maintain the healthy mindset needed to persevere and reach my goals. Although my life may seem uncomplicated at present, the journey here was not easy. I was deployed to five combat zones over the course of my military service. I endured mental, emotional, and physical hardships while serving my country. I do not say this with sadness. Indeed, these hardships have molded me into the man I am today, and I have no regrets. My life experiences have given me the resources and tools that I need to be the best father that I can be as well as helping me serve as a mentor for young people. I want to leave a legacy for my children. It is my sincerest hope that my new creative path in acting, and film production will inspire my children to pursue their dreams.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
On Monday, I would take him to Aromas Cigar. I really enjoy the relaxation that you feel when smoking a high-quality cigar. I also enjoy listening to Karaoke from some of the best singers in Jacksonville, Florida.
On Tuesday, we would start our day with breakfast at First Watch, lunch at BurgerFi, and dinner at Soul Food Bistro. As you can see, I love good food!!! Later that evening, we would go to Whispers Seafood Lounge and Restaurant and play some R and B Bingo.
On Wednesday, relax!
On Thursday, we would start our day with breakfast at Metro Diner, lunch at Chick Fila, and dinner at Juicy Crab. Afterwards, Old Skool Night at Cuba Libre is a must.
In Jacksonville, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are always filled with social events, comedy shows, live theatre, and concerts. I love to network, so we would go to as many events as possible.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to Carlos Smith from CASII Films. Carlos has been doing film for about 15 years. He writes, directs and produces his own films. His biggest project to date is Soulhood Saga. Carlos shoots and edits all my films, and we have a great working relationship. With his attention to detail, I won 8 film festival awards. He should be recognized globally for his talents and the world needs to recognize that Duval County is a treasure trove of talent that needs to be opened.
