Meet Saran Ama | Singer, Songwriter, & Entertainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Saran Ama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Saran, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic/creative career because God gave me a gift. I think it would be a shame to not use it as much as I can while I have an opportunity to. Pursuing a creative career is not the only way to do so. It just so happens that I love to sing and write, but I also love to perform and I enjoy sharing my music with the world. I’m a vessel here, I am here to serve and represent and music is one of the best ways that I can.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music career really started in elementary school. The feeling that I got when I would sing little solos in choir gave me a realization that there was something more to music for me, something that stuck. In middle school, I joined marching band and began to learn to play multiple instruments like the clarinet, Euphonium and marching trombone. That is where I learned that I loved music!! Whether it was singing, playing an instrument or just listening. My love for music really took to another level throughout my middle school years. I went to the Baltimore School for the Arts. First, as a Euphonist, and later as a singer. I trained classically for the next few years and learned that there was so much more to my voice than I ever thought. I then studied Classical Vocal Performance at the Jacobs School of Music for a couple of years. I am most proud of my ability to continue to move forward. I got where I am today by remaining open to opportunities and by remaining a student to life and to the game. It’d be foolish to believe that you are in a position that you are not and create this mentality that will ultimately prevent you from progressing. It certainly was not easy. I’ve invested and sacrificed a lot to get where I am and I’m not where I want to be, but it’s more than worth it to me. It’s an investment and the return on my investment will be HUGE. I’ve learned that there is always room to improve. I’ve learned that I cannot do it by myself and I don’t want to do it by myself. I’ve learned that I’m going to outgrow people and that’s okay. I’ve learned to believe in myself even if no one else does. I’ve learned that I don’t need outside validation, I just need to be myself. I want the world to know that I care. I use music to tell stories, to share experiences. I make music to communicate with everyone and if something that I create helps someone make it through whatever they are experiencing good or bad, then I’m serving my purpose.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is going to sound bad, but I am not sure, haha! I am new to Houston and I’ve been working since I moved here so I have only been out a couple of times. I can tell you that if you want some great food, Pier 6 or B&B Butcher’s Steakhouse would be a couple of places that I would recommend for sure! If you are looking for a fun turn up, I had a great time at Thirteen. I would take my friends to TopGolf and would even take us out for a spa day! That’s all I’ve got for now, haha.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout my mother out. She has always been my biggest advocate and always encouraged me to show up and show out- to believe in myself. I would also love to shout out DJMel, Atlantus, and Marcus Ecby for supporting me throughout my career. My last shout-outs belong to the educators who made lasting impacts in my life and my love for music. Anthony Flowers, Timothy Doscher, Dr. Mark Hardy, Robert Cantrell and Marietta Simpson. I wouldn’t be the musician that I am today without your dedication to my development. Thank you.
