We had the good fortune of connecting with Latisha and Willetta Alford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Latisha and Willetta, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for our businesses came from a passion and need. Latisha owns Back to the Basics Nutrition and Fitness, which came from the need of working with women who struggled with how to fuel their bodies. She knew that stripping away all the fancy food terms and keeping things very simple with nutrition was something that she wanted to offer to help women understand how nutrition played such an important part in their wellness process. That evolved into helping women who were struggling with their relationship with food lose body fat to meet their wellness goals. Willetta owns Willpower Health and Fitness. She has always been passionate about how the human body works and reacts to certain things, having degrees in Biology and Chemistry. She later became certified in fitness and nutrition, helping women learn how to eat without feeling totally restricted and properly train their bodies to meet their goals and needs. Naturally, we work together all of the time. We are using our platforms to collaborate more and take that to the next level, with nutrition being our main focus.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Entrepreneurship was not something new to us. We are sisters. Our father was an entrepreneur, so we had a small understanding of owning a business. When we started our own businesses, we knew that we were starting it out of a need. We started the businesses to help women who were struggling with their nutrition and fitness. We worked with a lot of runners through the national organization, Black Girls RUN! and noticed that despite the fact that we had done a great job getting off of the couch and walking/running, we struggled with nutrition. We were learning to be great runners and some of us were moving into strength training, but we did not know how to fuel our bodies properly to run. We started to research and received our nutritional certification so that we could help women fuel their bodies properly. That was just the start!

We are committed to our clients and getting them results. We are continuously improving our craft to provide the best programs to help women be their “best” selves. Our intent is to make wellness a lifestyle, not a fad. We want our clients to have a transformative experience, both mind and body! Our programs teach women not to restrict their food choices, but to enjoy the foods that they love and still meet their wellness goals.

Running a business is not easy, but it is rewarding. We endure challenges, but our passion to help others live a healthier lifestyle and faith in God is what keeps us going. Consistency has been key in all aspects of our businesses. We have to be consistent in believing in ourselves, consistent in our work habits, consistent in our faith, and consistent with our clients. Willpower and determination play a big role as well. Failure is not an option for us. If we fail, our clients fail.

We want women all over the world to know that they can have it all and do it all, but it starts with changing their mindset. Our brand focuses on the every day women achieving her goals, starting with herself. Invest in yourself and your health. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of everything and everyone else.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of our favorite places to go in the city are Trifecta Fitness Studio, Milner’s American Southern, Bleu Restaurant and Bar, Vintage Sofa Bar, Roar, 66 Pizzeria and Grill, Sweet Potatoes, and Cobblestone Farmer’s Market.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to thank God because none of this would be possible without him, our family, friends, clients, Trifecta Fitness Studio business partners, and mentors. We would also like to thank the Brand Trainers University for their guidance and support to help us grow our businesses. We would like to give a special thank you to our friends and mentors, Kelvin and Taleona Mayfield for nominating us and always believing in us. It takes a village and we are grateful for each person who makes up our support system.
