We had the good fortune of connecting with LaQueshia (Luh-Kwae-shuh) Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaQueshia (Luh-Kwae-shuh), how do you think about risk?
I think that without risk, there’s no reward. Nobody has ever gotten somewhere in life, they’ve never been, without FIRST doing something they’ve never done. When you take a chance and do something different, you discover new things about not only other people, places, and things…but about yourself, as well. I took a risk on building my brand and starting my organization. In the beginning, I didn’t know how far it would go or if people were even going to support it the way I would’ve liked them to, but the confidence I had in myself, as well as the fact that I knew my efforts would be more of a help than a disservice to people, is what made me mash the gas on pursuing my dreams.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
PrettyFatGrlGang was officially recognized as a business in April of 2019. We are a non-profit organization whose goal is to encourage plus-sized women to adapt healthy self-love practices and promote body-positivity.

What sets PrettyFatGrlGang apart from other body-positive organizations would most definitely be our creativity in our expression of liberation. For decades, big women have been tormented, ridiculed, and discriminated against because of our fat figures and through our content, we teach women how to embrace their differences and control their own narratives.

Our proudest moments live within the personal success stories of the women we inspire. Every time a woman writes us saying how she’s more comfortable in her skin and contributes her achievements to us….that’s a win. That not only a win for us, but a win for the entire plus-sized community, because when one of us feels more alive, WE ALL THRIVE!!

Running a business where you work with people, day in and day out, helping mold their perceptions and build self-confidence is anything but an easy task. You truly have to have a passion for what we do, in order for things to come together, but more importantly than that, your HEART has to be in it. Fortunately for me, I have had the honor of working alongside some amazing women who have helped turn my vision into a reality. Having a team is extremely important when you are trying to achieve great things. My team understands the mission and has helped me move mountains and be an aid to the masses. I am so grateful for them all.

With almost anything you have going on that’s good, the bad is sure to come with it. I have learned quite a few lessons along the way to building my brand and growing my business, some harder to bear more than others, but none that were able to deter me from my true calling. I have learned lessons like: (1) Protect your mental health at all times, (2) Watch the company you keep, and (3) As hard as the first step is to take, it had to happen in order to get where you’re going.

I want the world to know that we are here to make a difference and change lives. Just as much as we want to tell our story, we also want to be a part of each and every single one of yours. In a world so full of judgement and hate, it’s crucial that you learn how to love yourself, unconditionally. People will try their best to destroy you, but we not letting them break what they didn’t help build.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This question is most certainly a challenging one, being that I’m more of a home-body and enjoy the comforts of my own home, more than anything. I reside in Coats, NC but the closest neighboring city, with the most attractions, would be the capital, Raleigh, NC. Downtown Raleigh’s nightlife is pretty talked about, so we’d probably indulge in some bar hopping, visit a lounge or two, and partake in some karaoke. I’m big on family and value quality time spent with them, so a cookout (granted the weather permits) would definitely be on the itinerary. Raleigh is also filled with a bunch of local talent that I’d love to expose any out of towner to.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my mother, Charnelle Brown, for being my foundation. My mother, who was a plus-sized woman raising a plus-size little girl, provided me with the opportunity to CHOOSE the lifestyle I wanted for myself and fully support me throughout my self-love journey. I’d like to shoutout my cousin, Desiree Thomas, for seeing the power in my true potential and encouraging me to be a light in the lives of those who needed my gift. And last, but not least, I’d like to shoutout all of the thousands of plus-sized women who have not only benefited from my efforts, but have also supported and helped spread the word to other women who could use the motivation and inspiration. Thank you for putting your trust in me.
