We had the good fortune of connecting with MeiLani Hock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MeiLani, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a mother of 5 young kids, I started to feel like an imposter. I tried to convince them that they could do anything if they just put their mind to it. Yet I was miserable and tired working a job that did not bring me joy. In 2014, when my 3rd child was diagnosed with brain cancer, my whole life changed. Life seemed so unpredictable and too short to be living a life that did not bring me joy. After years of trying to convince my kids they could be whatever, and whoever they wanted to be if they worked hard and efficient… it finally sunk in my own brain. I started my real estate investing business a couple months later and the rest is history!

What should our readers know about your business?
It took my 2 year old son being diagnosed with cancer to get me to finally start following my dream of investing in real estate. After years of success and financial achievements, we had a terrible year. The type of year that sent me into a deep depression of re-evaluation. That’s when I started investing in Airbnbs using other people’s properties. My journey wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, but it was way better than I hoped. Our multiple businesses make money while we sleep… and travel 90+ days a year as a family of 7! And now I am lucky to get to help hundreds of others along their real estate journey to help them live their dream life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When you’ve given birth to a whole basketball team, it makes it easy to play family sports any time, anywhere. So we do a lot of athletic activities. Pickle ball is our latest thing, but we also love bike rides, basketball, football, baseball, etc. But of course we would wrap it up with snuggles on the couch with all 7 of us (and whatever friend we are inviting) playing charades or watching a movie while we have popcorn and ice cream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
HUGE shout out to my Hock Team: Michael, Houston, Hadley, AJ, Hunter, Mayley. They are my family but also my mentors. Everyday I learn a lesson at home, that applies to my business. I try to share them on my Instagram account and have found they are helpful to others as well. Also, when we were in the midst of financial stress, medical issues, etc and I asked my husband if I could leave corporate America and chase my dreams of real estate investing… he said “yes, because I believe in you.” That kind of partner is irreplaceable.
