We had the good fortune of connecting with Matty Griswold and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matty, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Great question. I have spent most of my life on the fence with this one. The world obviously has no shortage of talent and my desire to see other people succeed sometimes clouds the vision I have of seeing myself succeeding. Humility is tough in this industry and Im sort of a starve the ego sort of person. I have to remind myself from time to time that envisioning myself in a role of success with my music doesnt have to be rooted in ego. Id rather keep the faith over the arrogance and that battle sometimes does drive person into a position where they give up. Someone told me one time those who give up will never know how close they really were to achieving their dreams. It isnt easy to internalize that message for me but it isnt supposed to be easy.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think I’ve said this before in a voyage interview but life is not easy. it’s not supposed to be easy, but it is supposed to be rewarding. I’m not an extremely successful musician. I don’t make a lot of money making music but it brings me a joy that life in general does not. I’m the sort of person that had to learn the hard way that life is a series of battles you win and lose sall successes that you gain and friends that come and go and you have to ebb and flow with life and it’s really hard sometimes to know where you stand in an industry that’s overpopulated with talented people. I have to balance my desire to see other people succeed.with the idea that I also deserve success. This sort of thought mental process has brought me many challenges in my life. It’s been very hard to overcome some of those challenges and to this day I still am overcoming some things. I don’t think I’ll ever be completely perfect but as long as I set my expectations and I’m completely honest with myself about them then I don’t see how life could get any harder from here on.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I’d have to take a visitor camping for sure. The thing I love about Atlanta is that you get to Big City feel but you can drive one hour away and be in some of the most beautiful nature ive ever seen. some people are scared of that which is why I would love to take them out, show them true Georgia and then maybe on the way back we can hit Krog Street Market and stroll through Inman Park and I’ll give them the Atlanta experience that I had for many years and was lucky enough to be a part of.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and father are the reason I started playing guitar so I have to give them the shout out first. They have unconditionally supported and loved me through my ups and downs and constantly encourage me to follow my dreams. They are my favorite people in the world along with my 3 brothers and without them having my back I wouldnt stand a chance in this industry.
