We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoe Ruddock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zoe, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was ten years old when I said “I WILL have a brand of my own one day”. Even as I got older I would find myself sketching drawings here and there and scribbling random marketing and business ideas. I began putting things in place and mapping out a plan towards the end of 2017 and had actually planned to launch RUDD. The Label at the top of 2020; as we all know the pandemic came through and tossed everyone into a whole new way of life. Despite COVID I decided to launch my brand anyways, so I launched RUDD. on my birthday, at the height of a pandemic (lol) and actually, I am so glad I did because the launch was a success and I know it’s only up from here.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
If there’s anything I want people to know about my brand is that everything is designed thoughtfully and intentionally. This means each piece was literally drawn and sketched out, measurements were decided, samples were created, and the final result is something that was approved by me. What sets my brand apart is the devoted energy that is placed into creating timeless pieces that people can style in endless ways. Our minimalist designs are the foundation that invites everyone to experiment with and embrace their own individual style.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The James Room is a recent discovery of mine I think It’s worth everyones while to experience. I won’t even go into detail but just know its a dope spot. Tom Dick, & Hanks has the best barbecue food selection. Thank me later. I have the occasional sweet tooth so Sublime Doughnuts is a go-to spot for the tastiest doughnut selections not to mention they are 24 HOURS! Also if you ever spot a “Not As Famous” cookie truck in Atlanta stop what you are doing and get some of those cookies… listen just trust me. Last but not least Table 25 Fork + Wine is a fav of mine with good vibes and amazing food. Oh and the best part all of these places is that they are all Black-owned. Buy Black.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a huge shoutout to my best friend Mal (aka my favorite photographer @mali_mal & @farlonger). There are so many things I doubt I could accomplish without him. He is literally the glue that keeps me together always. I also want to shoutout the amazing team of women behind the magazine I work for Legends Magazine. Lena, Brittney, and Quoya thank you ladies for being some of the kindest, dopest, and most creative black women I know! Last but not least a BIG shoutout to all of my supporters. Whether it’s family, friends, or perfect strangers the support and love that has been poured into me and my brand has been heartwarming and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you.
