We had the good fortune of connecting with Zhairie’ Hightower and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zhairie’, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art has always been a passion of mine ever since a kid so it was a natural selection. From drawing, music, fashion, even dance as well! Photography was only a small hobby of mine that I would do in my free time in high school using my phone or small digital cameras my mom would buy me. But once I got to college and was able to purchase my own very first dslr camera, I knew then that photography was something that I could definitely take serious as a career. I’ve always loved the idea of seeing my memories and creative ideas in picture form. It brings me joy to be able to help others capture those same moments as well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What my business Whimsical Photography usually specializes in is portrait, creative, and urban styled content but I can do other styles of photography as well. I’m most known for bringing a 90s inspired feel and vibrancy to the creative/urban shoots that I do. What sets me apart from others is that I always try to think outside of the box and do things I haven’t seen when it comes to shooting portrait styled photography and adding my own twist to it.
Being a full time entrepreneur always has its ups and downs but it’s definitely nothing too tough for me to handle. I’m most proud of all the accomplishments and how far I’ve come on this 4 1/2 year journey. From magazine features, winning photo competitions, etc. I can only imagine what’s ahead of me next when it comes to following my dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My go to answer for this is ALWAYS Downtown Macon. There are so many things being added everyday it seems lol! We’d start with going to a nice brunch/lunch restaurant (it’s plenty of restaurant options in the downtown area to choose from). Some of my favorite places are pretty much hidden gems. We have a adult arcade here that’s pretty fun as well. We’d maybe go thrifting or check out one of the few record shops that are around the area. And lastly, there’s plenty to do in the night time even on week days surprisingly. Plenty of lounges, bars and club options to choose from. Whichever fits your vibe. I normally choose to go for the more fun, quirky, and music type settings.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d just like to thank my mom for always allowing me to be who I am and follow my dreams no matter what they are. And my friends, (even the new ones I met down the line) who have been on this journey with me as my creative muses. We’ve all grown along this almost 5 year journey and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for us all!
