We had the good fortune of connecting with Zaira Tary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zaira, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think life in general is about taking risks, if we don’t do that we would never know what wouldn’t happened and I personally have a huge fear of losing out in new adventures and experiences. I don’t like to be in my comfort zone, I like to live a fun life doing what I want and love. Taking risks is a challenge and has it’s consequences which could be good or bad, but I have always taken the positive side of every decision and situation I been through so I have never regretted any decision I made in my life because has benefited me in many ways and areas of my life. The biggest risk I took in my life it was quitting my job and dedicating myself full time to developing my Rollerskating company as it always has been my dream, even though the city I’m from I was the only skater and barely had ways to make this happen but when you follow your heart and want to share with others what you love you find the way to do so and I ended providing lessons, workshops and performances not just in Spain but worldwide, love and passion are always the key but of course being confident and owning your decisions and actions will lead you to the right path. And the second biggest risk I took was moving from my country ,Spain to United Kingdom to keeping developing my Rollerskating career as a teacher and performer. Here I work for a skate company but I do also own my own company. Taking a risk is always worthy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a sports sciences and physical education teacher graduated so my passion for sports is obvious, but skating is something that conquered my heart since the very first time I tried when I was 4 years old. I didn’t stop skating since them. I’m from Cadiz a little city by the coast in south Spain where there was no skaters at all so I learnt on my own. As I grew up I started to teach some kids in the streets even some adults because I wanted others to experience the joy of rollerskating providing the help I never had. Then while I was studying my first degree in sports and having the tools to do it properly I decided to open the very first skate school in my city, I was 20 years old back then. I came with the idea mostly because I needed to find time to skate for myself as well as helping others out and because I dreamed with starting a skate community in my city so no one would have to skate alone like I did most of my life. And I’m proud to say I did it! I ran the school for 12 years I started with 2 students and it ended with over 100 and nowadays there is a skate community in Cadiz, then I move to UK to keep developing and spreading my love for skating and to provide high quality skate lessons as a sport sciences professional and as an official skate instructor and to have access to more opportunities as a skate performer as I’m also an artist with a professional dance background.Currently i work for BUMP Rollerdisco where I teach and train rink staff and I do have my own skate company BUMP Movement that provides the skate lessons and workshops and performances worldwide. I worked performing as a skater on inlines, quads and ice worldwide, and took part in Got Talent Spain and Germany and also got the first place twice in the international Roller Dance competitions between others. When I look back and realise how many things I was able to achieve and how everything started it feels unreal! It was very very hard to be able to get there, coming from a city with no opportunities at all ,but no matter what I always kept going I always kept training, creating, organising events and shows for my skate community and I did it because I love it without expecting anything else, I always knew I deserved a good opportunity and I was aware of my talent that kept me motivated, I think hard work pays off and suddenly the opportunities came, once I started to travel to international events I met people who were interested in my talent and creativity and that meant to work even harder. All of that led me to work with brands such as Netflix, Warner Brothers, BBC , etc. Get skate Sponsors and everything that many people would tell me I would never have been able to. But the only opinion that matters is yours, so I never listen to the rest and always kept focus on what I wanted and I knew I would get it. If you have a dream go and work for it because nobody will do it for you and Don’t let no one tell you what you can or can’t do in your life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will get you a tour around Cadiz where I’m originally from.
Cadiz city is one of the oldest from Europe and has beautiful Beaches that you can admire the most amazing sunsets while skating or riding a bike on the bike lanes around the city, there are also surf schools where you can learn how to surf. The city centre has lots of restaurants where you can eat fresh fish prices are affordable and plates are big, any restaurant in the city is good. If you like Salsa dancing as I do you can go to Sala Diwali , Ofarrel, Tocororo . And I would recommend to go visit El Palmar in summer and Zahara de los Atunes for nice chiringuito restaurants, live music and party at outdoors clubs in front of the beach with a great and friendly atmosphere. Also Los Caños de Meca, where you can sit in the Beautiful Jaima bar on the beach for a romantic date at the sea front , and if you like mountain then the route of the white towns. Although there are loads to visit these are my favourite places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have never been able to be doing what I do without the support of my family , who’s been always by my side and told me to do what it makes me happy and be myself without caring about others opinions. Specially my grandmother and Mother.
Thanks a lot to my Company BUMP Rollerdisco who has supported and valued me as a professional since I came to the UK, and of course thanks to my partner who is always by my side for the good and bad and helping me with my projects.
